Minnesota Timberwolves Expected To Attempt To Trade For Milwaukee Bucks’ Giannis Antetokounmpo

The Minnesota Timberwolves are expected to attempt to trade for Milwaukee Bucks superstar Giannis Antetokounmpo, according to NBA reporter Jon Krawczynski of The Athletic.
Antetokounmpo is ready to leave the Bucks and the Timberwolves have one of the most aggressive execs in the NBA in Tim Connelly.
“Anytime a player like Giannis Antetokounmpo is available, you have to put Timberwolves President of Basketball Operations Tim Connelly’s name in the running for a trade,” Krawczynski wrote. “Connelly has been one of the most aggressive front office leaders since he took the job in Minnesota. He has swung big deals for Rudy Gobert, Julius Randle and Donte DiVincenzo and his swap of D’Angelo Russell for Mike Conley and Nickeil Alexander-Walker helped catapult the Wolves into contender status. Does he have the ammunition to get a deal done? We will see, but I definitely expect him to be inquiring.”
The Timberwolves have lost in the Western Conference Finals two years in a row. Pairing Antetokounmpo with Anthony Edwards could be the missing piece Minnesota needs to get over the hump.
As of this writing, the Timberwolves are in seventh place in the Western Conference standings.
One of the greatest players in NBA history, Antetokounmpo is making $54.1 million this season. He has a player option worth $62.8 million for the 2027-28 season. The future Hall of Famer doesn’t have a no-trade clause in his contract, so he can’t control where the Bucks trade him.
Milwaukee has lost in the first round of the playoffs three years in a row. Antetokounmpo is tired of losing and is ready to play for another team.
Multiple teams are pursuing Antetokounmpo even though the swingman is expected to miss the next four to six weeks with a right calf injury. Antetokounmpo has appeared in 30 games this season. He’s averaging 28.0 points, 10.0 rebounds and 5.6 assists per game.
A top 75 player of all time, Antetokounmpo is a two-time MVP, one-time Finals MVP, one-time Defensive Player of the Year and 10-time All-Star. He holds career averages of 24.0 points, 9.9 rebounds, 5.0 assists, 1.1 steals and 1.2 blocks per game.
The 2026 NBA trade deadline is February 5 at 3 p.m. ET.
