NBA Scouts See Early Defensive Upside In Dallas Mavericks Big Man Moussa Cissé

Moussa Cissé arrived in training camp as an Exhibit 10 flier. Two months later, scouts around the league say the Mavericks may have uncovered a legitimate developmental center with long-term defensive value.

Cissé has appeared in 15 games while averaging 3.3 points, 3.6 rebounds and 1.2 blocks. His early-season minutes came out of necessity, but evaluators say the physical tools and motor he’s shown give him a real chance to stick.

NBA Scouts Take Notice of Moussa Cissé’s Tools

One NBA scout monitoring his development told R.org that Cissé’s athleticism and intensity are already translating.

“He’s a bit undersized at the five, but he’s explosive and plays extremely hard,” the scout told R.org. “He’s a bit further along than I expected, but there’s still plenty of work there. You can tell he’s still getting used to guarding NBA actions and talent — his angles can use some work. But he’s really dynamic rotating from the weak side and he’s going to crash the boards hard on both ends. I like his potential.”

Another scout pointed to availability as a key part of his value on a roster hit by frontcourt injuries.

“Their bigs are going to miss games. Moussa reminds me of how Kai Jones stepped in and made an impact for them last season. He was a great find that they’ll need to keep around.”

Dallas Mavericks Coaches Lean on His Energy and Rim Protection

Cissé’s best flashes came quickly. He delivered a four-block night against Phoenix on Nov. 12, then recorded 10 points and 10 rebounds against Minnesota on Nov. 17. Those moments helped push the Mavericks to convert his Exhibit 10 deal into a two-way contract.

Head coach Jason Kidd said the staff noticed his motor instantly.

“Moussa has been really good for us… The energy he brings to the team spreads quickly in the game,” Kidd said. “His hustle, his effort… being able to come up with big plays, blocking shots, coming up with offensive rebounds and giving us second opportunities.”

For Cissé, the foundation remains simple.

“I love playing defense,” he said. “I want to block every shot, and I alter a lot of shots.”

Scouts agree there is plenty to refine, but in a league starving for mobile rim protectors, Cissé’s first impression has been enough to put him firmly on the radar.
