One NBA analyst proposed that the Los Angeles Lakers trade for Washington Wizards guard Marcus Smart.

Jedd Pagaduan of ClutchPoints proposed the following trade idea between the Lakers and Wizards:

Los Angeles Lakers get: Marcus Smart

Washington Wizards get: Gabe Vincent, Maxi Kleber, 2032 second-round pick

Smart played for the Memphis Grizzlies and Wizards last season. He averaged 9.0 points, 2.1 rebounds and 3.2 assists while shooting 39.3% from the field, 34.8% from beyond the arc and 76.1% from the free-throw line.

Smart will make $21.6 million next season in the final year of his contract. The veteran is better suited to play for a contender like the Lakers, who have All-Stars Luka Doncic and LeBron James.

The Wizards are still rebuilding. They haven’t made the postseason since 2021.

The 31-year-old Smart has played for the Boston Celtics, Grizzlies and Wizards. The 2022 Defensive Player of the Year has career averages of 10.6 points, 3.4 rebounds and 4.6 assists.

Smart was the sixth overall pick in the 2014 NBA Draft. He has appeared in 108 postseason games, all with the Celtics.

The Lakers are expected to start Doncic, Austin Reaves, Rui Hachimura, James and Deandre Ayton next season. Smart could come off the bench for second-year head coach JJ Redick.

Los Angeles lost to the Minnesota Timberwolves in the first round of the 2025 playoffs despite having Doncic, James and home-court advantage. The team needs more bench depth, which is why Pagaduan thinks Rob Pelinka should trade for Smart.

The Lakers haven’t made any trades yet this offseason. They lost Dorian Finney-Smith to the Houston Rockets and signed Ayton and Jake LaRavia.

It will be fascinating to see if Pelinka makes any trades this summer. The Lakers haven’t made an offseason trade since 2022.
