The Brooklyn Nets and Minnesota Timberwolves are not pursuing a trade for Trae Young, but the Washington Wizards and Atlanta Hawks are engaged in serious discussions, according to NBA insider Jake Fischer of The Stein Line.

The Wizards have discussed a trade for Young centered around CJ McCollum‘s expiring contract.

Atlanta is expected to trade Young before the NBA trade deadline, which is next month.

“The Hawks and Wizards have indeed engaged in serious discussions on a Young swap, league sources say, but a trade might not necessarily happen fast,” Fischer wrote. “I’m told Atlanta wants to see, if possible between now and the Feb. 5 trade buzzer, if any other potential trade partners emerge. So far, though, it has been difficult to confirm another team in active pursuit of Young. The Wizards, according to several league sources briefed on the talks, have been monitoring Young’s situation ever since the offseason came and went with no extension.

“I’m told that Young’s camp has suggested Minnesota and Brooklyn, from their side, as two attractive potential destinations. Yet I’m also told that neither the Timberwolves nor the Nets are in pursuit.”

The Sacramento Kings have been looking to acquire a point guard ever since trading De’Aaron Fox to the San Antonio Spurs last season, but they are not interested in Young either.

Young is making $45.9 million this season. The Oklahoma product can become an unrestricted free agent next offseason by declining his 2026-27 player option worth $48.9 million.

A four-time All-Star, Young is averaging 19.3 points and 8.9 assists per game this season while shooting 41.5% from the field, 30.5% from beyond the arc and 86.3% from the free-throw line. The Hawks are only 2-8 with him in the lineup.

The 27-year-old Young has career averages of 25.2 points and 9.8 assists per game. He doesn’t have a no-trade clause in his contract, preventing him from controlling his future.
