Nikola Jokić Will Not Sign Extension With Denver Nuggets This NBA Offseason

Nikola Jokić informed the Denver Nuggets that he will not sign a contract extension this offseason and plans to wait until the summer of 2026 to revisit long-term negotiations, according to Bennett Durando of The Denver Post.
The decision does not surprise Nuggets leadership, who presented Jokić and his representatives with two options: extend now for up to three years and $212 million or wait until 2026 and become eligible for a deal worth roughly $80 million more. Jokić’s camp has elected to hold off, a move that aligns with his long-term earning potential.
“Nikola Jokic has informed the Nuggets he will not sign a contract extension this offseason, team sources told The Denver Post, as the three-time MVP intends to wait until next summer to engage in contract talks,” Durando wrote. “Jokic has a minimum of two years remaining on his current supermax contract, as well as a player option for the 2027-28 season. Tuesday was the first day he was eligible for an extension that would add up to three years and $212 million to that deal.
The Nuggets captured the NBA championship in 2023, defeating the Miami Heat in five games behind a dominant performance from Nikola Jokić, who was named Finals MVP.
Since that title run, Denver has fallen short in back-to-back postseasons, losing in the second round in seven games each time. The Nuggets were eliminated by the Minnesota Timberwolves in 2024 and by the Oklahoma City Thunder in 2025.
Jokić averaged a triple-double last season and finished second in MVP voting. The future Hall of Famer posted 29.6 points, 12.7 rebounds and 10.2 assists per game, while shooting 57.6% from the field, 41.7% from 3-point range and 80.0% from the free-throw line.
Now 30, Jokić has spent his entire career in Denver and is widely regarded as the greatest player in franchise history — and one of the greatest ever to play. A seven-time All-Star, Jokić holds career averages of 21.8 points, 10.9 rebounds, and 7.2 assists across 745 games with the Nuggets.
Denver has made significant changes this offseason. The team traded Michael Porter Jr. to the Brooklyn Nets in exchange for Cameron Johnson and added Bruce Brown and Tim Hardaway Jr. in free agency.
The Nuggets also dealt Dario Šarić to the Sacramento Kings for Jonas Valančiūnas, though Valančiūnas is reportedly looking to leave the NBA and pursue an opportunity with Greek club Panathinaikos.
