The Dallas Wings enter Friday’s matchup against the Atlanta Dream with uncertainty surrounding rookie guard Paige Bueckers and a roster stretched to the WNBA’s minimum requirement. Teams must dress at least eight players to compete, leaving Dallas once again scrambling to piece together depth in the face of a crowded injury list.

Bueckers, who was a late scratch in Wednesday’s loss to the Connecticut Sun due to illness, is listed as questionable. The rookie guard had been upgraded to available after participating in shootaround and a pre-game workout before ultimately being ruled out minutes before tipoff. Grace Berger stepped into the starting lineup in her absence, and Bueckers’ status will again be a game-time decision.

Aziaha James, coming off a 22-point and six-assist performance against the Sun, is doubtful with a right ankle injury. Fellow guard Haley Jones, who has started throughout the season after joining on a hardship contract, is also doubtful due to a right knee issue.

Dallas Wings Have Key Players Sidelined

The Wings will be without several other contributors. Luisa Geiselsöder was ruled out with a right shoulder injury after leaving Wednesday’s game early, while Tyasha Harris, JJ Quinerly, Arike Ogunbowale, and Li Yueru are all sidelined with long-term knee injuries.

Amy Okonkwo’s initial seven-day hardship contract expired on Thursday, but as a source told DallasHoopsJournal.com, the Wings are expected to re-sign her to another deal ahead of Friday’s game. Doing so would help to meet the league’s eight-player minimum.

Myisha Hines-Allen recently said the group continues to focus on competing despite the relentless adversity. She explained that players have had to embrace different roles and fight through fatigue.

“You’ve just got to come in every day ready to compete no matter what,” Hines-Allen said. “We’ve all been asked to adjust, to play different roles, to play through fatigue. Nobody’s healthy this deep in the year, but we can’t use that as an excuse. We still have to fight.”

Resilience Amid Attrition

For a team battered by injuries, Dallas has leaned on something less tangible but equally vital: resilience. With rotation pieces constantly shifting and lineups reinvented night after night, the Wings have had to draw on depth, adaptability, and the steady presence of voices in the locker room. That resilience has been embodied not only by veterans but also by hardship additions stepping into roles on the fly.

Hines-Allen also pointed to Okonkwo’s immediate impact since joining on hardship, praising her voice and energy.

“She’s been a spark the second she steps on the court,” Hines-Allen said. “Even in shootarounds she’s vocal and telling us what she sees, and that holds weight because of the respect she has. She played super well — defensively aggressive, smart with her shots, and creating for herself and teammates. She looked like she’s been with us all season.”

Jones emphasized that the locker room’s togetherness has been crucial through the constant lineup changes.

“Our locker room is still together,” Jones said. “Even with all the injuries, everybody is supportive. We hold each other accountable, and we’re still having fun with it. That’s the biggest thing — nobody’s hanging their head. We’re all in this together.”

Koclanes noted that the physical attrition has tested his players’ bodies and focus. He explained that the group has had to sharpen its identity with so many key contributors sidelined.

“Physical fatigue shows up mentally, and that leads to lapses in the scouting report and breakdowns in execution,” Koclanes said. “It forces us to be sharper about our identity. We can’t look at what we don’t have. We have to look at what we do have, and that’s a group that can still compete.”

The Wings (9–30) will need that resilience Friday as they travel to face an Atlanta team fighting for playoff positioning. Tipoff is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. CT on ION.
