Dallas Wings Practice Interviews: Paige Bueckers, Arike Ogunbowale And Jose Fernandez (May 16, 2026)

DHJ Quick Take: Wings Focus on Internal Alignment Ahead of Mystics Matchup

  • The Accountability Mandate: Following consecutive losses, head coach Jose Fernandez lauded his squad’s “spirited” Saturday session, noting that the players took immediate ownership of their execution errors. Instead of jumping straight into a Washington scouting report, Dallas spent the practice correcting internal breakdowns.
  • Diagnosing the Spain Pick-and-Roll: Paige Bueckers mentioned that Thursday’s loss against Minnesota marked the team’s first time defending Spain pick-and-roll this season. After reviewing the tape, Bueckers emphasized that the team’s coverage, tags, and defensive rotations are entirely fixable with proper reps.
  • Ogunbowale Rejects the Panic: Arike Ogunbowale directly pushed back against early-season scrutiny surrounding the Wings’ 1-2 start. Pointing to the roster turnover and a brand-new coaching staff, she reminded critics that it is “literally only game three” and urged a long-term perspective.
  • Stagnant Offense Corrections: A primary focal point of Saturday’s workout was addressing second-half offensive stagnation. After racking up 16 first-half assists against the Lynx, Dallas managed just six after intermission—a drop-off Fernandez attributed to a lack of extra passes and the ball getting “sticky.”
  • Frontcourt Litmus Test: The interior defense faces a massive challenge on Monday against a high-powered Mystics frontcourt. Washington enters at 2-1 following a 104-102 overtime win against Indiana, propelled by Kiki Iriafen’s dominant 25-point, 13-rebound performance alongside Shakira Austin.

ARLINGTON, Texas — The Dallas Wings held a practice Saturday that coach Jose Fernandez called “spirited,” two days after a 90-86 home loss to the Minnesota Lynx and two days before they host the Washington Mystics.

Fernandez challenged his team after Thursday’s loss, the Wings’ second straight, and said the players responded. Dallas, which fell to 1-2, spent the session on its own execution and film rather than the scouting report for Washington.

The Lynx erased a 12-point deficit and outscored Dallas 22-16 in the fourth quarter on Thursday. Fernandez pointed to defensive breakdowns and a stalled offense, noting the Wings recorded 16 assists in the first half and 6 after halftime. Minnesota also held an 18-9 edge in second-chance points.

“We had a very spirited practice today. It was really, really good,” Fernandez said. “I liked the way that we came in prepared and how we communicated.”

Fernandez said the team has to clean up its pick-and-roll coverage, including its tags and rotations, and stop committing turnovers after defensive stops. He pointed to ball movement as another priority and said he was encouraged by the players’ accountability.

“What I liked is the ownership that they took,” Fernandez said.

Paige Bueckers, who scored a season-high 27 points in the loss, said the team’s errors are correctable.

“I think most, if not all, of our mistakes and miscommunications are fixable,” Bueckers said.

Bueckers singled out pick-and-roll defense and said the Lynx game was the team’s first time defending a Spain pick-and-roll, an action she said the Wings will guard better after reviewing it on film.

Arike Ogunbowale pushed back on the early scrutiny, calling a 1-2 start the product of only three games with a new coach and roster.

“It’s literally only game three,” Ogunbowale said. “We’re gonna be okay.”

Ogunbowale said the Wings have to defend better as a unit, emphasizing help defense, and that the team’s depth means no player has to force difficult shots.

The Mystics enter Monday at 2-1 after a 104-102 overtime win at the Indiana Fever. Fernandez said Washington’s frontcourt, led by Kiki Iriafen and Shakira Austin, will test the Wings inside.

“Our bigs are definitely gonna get tested inside,” Fernandez said. “We gotta rebound together.”

Dallas will begin its Mystics preparation on Sunday.

The Wings close their three-game homestand Monday against the Mystics at College Park Center. Tip-off is set for 7 p.m. CT on Peacock.
