DHJ Quick Take: Practice Readiness and Culture Building
- Injury Watch: The most critical update from Thursday is Aziaha James returning to drills. Her perimeter defense and scoring punch are vital for a backcourt that needs depth against Caitlin Clark. While Alanna Smith is still limited to individual work, the “progressing well” label suggests the medical staff is aiming for a game-day decision for the defensive anchor.
- The Veteran Standard: Alysha Clark’s focus on “championship culture” highlights why she was a priority signing for Jose Fernandez. In a reconstructed roster, her ability to bridge the gap between off-court chemistry and on-court execution is the “glue” that will determine how quickly this group gels.
- Transition Tempo: Maddy Siegrist’s excitement about the increased pace confirms that Fernandez is leaning into the Wings’ athleticism. With Paige Bueckers at the helm, a transition-heavy offense utilizes Siegrist’s ability to run the floor and creates early-clock opportunities before defenses can set.
- The Aliyah Boston Factor: Indiana presents a unique challenge in Game 1. Unlike the preseason meeting, the Fever will have Aliyah Boston anchoring the paint. Fernandez’s breakdown of that matchup highlights a key chess match: how Dallas counters Boston’s gravity while managing their own frontcourt health.
ARLINGTON, Texas — The Dallas Wings wrapped up their second-to-last practice of training camp at College Park Center on Thursday, with head coach Jose Fernandez, Maddy Siegrist, and Alysha Clark all addressing the media as the team finalizes preparation for Saturday’s regular-season opener at the Indiana Fever.
Thursday marked the Wings’ 15th practice of camp, including shootarounds. Fernandez said Friday’s session will be treated more like a shootaround given the early Saturday tip-off, with the focus shifting to game-by-game preparation once the regular season begins.
The full interviews from Thursday’s media availability are embedded below.
Jose Fernandez on Injuries, Aliyah Boston, and the Season Ahead
Fernandez offered the most direct update yet on the statuses of forward Alanna Smith and guard Aziaha James, saying both players are “progressing well” with two days until the opener. James returned to drills with teammates on Thursday after missing Tuesday’s and Wednesday’s sessions with a sprained ankle, while Smith was held out of the live portion and went through individual work on the side as she recovers from a nasal fracture sustained on an inadvertent A’ja Wilson elbow in Sunday’s preseason finale.
Fernandez also broke down the defensive challenges presented by Indiana Fever center Aliyah Boston, who did not play in the Wings’ preseason matchup with the Fever, and discussed the developmental contract additions of Costanza Verona and Dulcy Fankam Mendjiadeu.
Maddy Siegrist on Her Fourth Camp, Paige Bueckers’ Year 2, and the Indiana Test
Siegrist, now entering her fourth season with the franchise and working under her third head coach in Dallas, said the team’s pace and depth have been the most noticeable shifts in training camp.
“I think speed and depth are probably two things that stand out right away,” Siegrist said. “We’ve definitely gotten up and down more. So I’m super excited about that. I love playing in transition, so I can’t wait for that.”
Siegrist also addressed expectations for Paige Bueckers in her second WNBA season, the importance of Awak Kuier‘s return, and what makes the Indiana Fever a difficult Game 1 matchup.
Alysha Clark on Building a Championship Culture in Dallas
Clark, a three-time WNBA champion, signed with the Wings in free agency this offseason after being identified as a culture and leadership piece by Fernandez and the front office. She spoke at length about what drew her to Dallas, the standard Fernandez set from his first day on the job, and why off-court chemistry consistently translates to on-court results on title teams.
“That chemistry off the court will always translate on the court,” Clark said.
Clark also addressed the importance of dedicated practice facilities to free-agent decisions, the growing investment from NBA-affiliated ownership groups in the WNBA, and how the team is approaching the gap between Indiana’s continuity and the Wings’ largely reconstructed roster.
