The Minnesota Timberwolves are interested in signing LeBron James, according to Sam Amick of The Athletic.
James will not re-sign with the Los Angeles Lakers.
Along with the Timberwolves, James has been linked to the Cleveland Cavaliers, Miami Heat and Golden State Warriors. The NBA legend is a free agent for the first time since the summer of 2018.
“What’s more, the Warriors do not appear to have clarity yet regarding James’ plans,” Amick wrote. “Cleveland and Miami are often cited as realistic landing spots as well, and the Minnesota Timberwolves are known to have interest if he felt like shocking the basketball world with that sort of move. It seems like we’re heading toward another LeBron free agency in which, to some degree, he leaves everyone guessing until the end.”
James and Timberwolves star Anthony Edwards were teammates on Team USA in 2024. They are close friends.
Minnesota already made two blockbuster moves this offseason, trading Naz Reid to the Charlotte Hornets for LaMelo Ball and sending Julius Randle to the Brooklyn Nets in a salary dump.
The Timberwolves beat the Denver Nuggets in the first round of this year’s playoffs in six games but lost to the San Antonio Spurs in the second round in six games. Minnesota made the conference finals in 2024 and 2025. The franchise needs another star next to Edwards to become a legitimate championship contender and James fits that bill.
Arguably the greatest player in NBA history, James played in 60 games this past season, his 23rd year in the NBA. He averaged 20.9 points, 6.1 rebounds and 7.2 assists per game.
James, who has been in the NBA since 2003, is a four-time MVP, four-time champion and four-time Finals MVP. He’s the all-time leader in points, field goals, minutes and games.
