The Golden State Warriors are trying to trade for Washington Wizards big man Anthony Davis and sign LeBron James, according to Shams Charania of ESPN.
James is an unrestricted free agent. He’s been with the Los Angeles Lakers since the 2018-19 season.
Davis and James led the Lakers to the 2020 championship at the Walt Disney World bubble. The two All-Stars have the same agent, Rich Paul of Klutch Sports Group, and are very close friends.
Draymond Green, who is also represented by Paul and close with James and Davis, is declining his $27.7 million player option for next season to become a free agent. This move gives the Warriors flexibility to pursue James in free agency and Davis via trade.
Golden State wants to create a “Big 4” of James, Davis, Green and Stephen Curry. James, Davis and Curry were teammates on Team USA in the summer of 2024. USA beat France in the gold medal game and James and Davis played very well off Curry.
The Warriors missed the playoffs this past season. They have won four championships in the Curry-Green era. However, Golden State hasn’t advanced past the second round of the playoffs since 2022, the year Curry led the team to the championship against the Boston Celtics.
Arguably the greatest player in NBA history, James played in 60 games this past season, his 23rd year in the NBA. He averaged 20.9 points, 6.1 rebounds and 7.2 assists per game.
In the 2026 playoffs against the Houston Rockets and Oklahoma City Thunder, James put up 23.2 points, 6.7 rebounds and 7.3 assists per game. The Lakers got swept by the Thunder in the second round. It was the first time James lost in the second round of the playoffs since 2010.
James, who has been in the NBA since 2003, is a four-time MVP, four-time champion and four-time Finals MVP. He’s played for the Cleveland Cavaliers (twice), Miami Heat and Lakers and is the all-time leader in points, field goals, minutes and games.
Davis will make $58.5 million next season. He’s extension-eligible this offseason. The Chicago native, acquired by the Wizards from the Dallas Mavericks at the 2026 trade deadline in February, didn’t play for Washington this past season because of ligament damage in his left hand. He finished the 2025-26 campaign with averages of 20.4 points, 11.1 rebounds and 1.7 blocks per game.
A future Hall of Famer like James, Curry and Green, Davis has played for the New Orleans Pelicans, Lakers and Mavericks. He’s one of the greatest two-way players in NBA history.
If the Warriors trade for Davis and sign James, they will be a legitimate title contender next season. Let’s see if it happens.
