‘We’ll See’: Anthony Davis Ruled Out As Dallas Mavericks Take Cautious Approach With Calf Injury

The Dallas Mavericks will be without Anthony Davis on Monday night, opting for caution as the team continues to manage his health amid an already thinned rotation.

Davis was ruled out for the road matchup against the Utah Jazz after suffering a left calf contusion during Friday’s win over the Brooklyn Nets. While the injury is not believed to be severe, the Mavericks elected not to push the issue on a one-game trip, especially given the broader context of the team’s injury situation.

Head coach Jason Kidd made clear that the decision is being handled on a day-to-day basis rather than tied to a firm timetable.

“We’ll see,” Kidd said. “Hopefully he feels better tomorrow & we’ll see how it goes during the week. That’s it. We’ll see how he feels.”

Anthony Davis’ Impact When Available

When Davis has been on the floor, he has served as a stabilizing force for Dallas on both ends. In 11 games this season, Davis has averaged 20.0 points, 10.5 rebounds, and 3.2 assists, anchoring the interior while providing offensive consistency during a stretch marked by frequent lineup changes. Dallas has gone 6-5 in games Davis plays, but are 4-11 when he’s unable to play.

Davis began dealing with the calf issue late during Friday’s game, but the Mavericks opted against testing it further, particularly with the team already dealing with multiple frontcourt absences.

A Calculated Absence, Not a Setback

The Mavericks’ approach reflects a broader emphasis on managing workloads rather than reacting to single-game urgency. With several players already lost for the season, Dallas has prioritized avoiding compounded injuries that could linger or escalate.

The decision to sit Davis also aligns with how the team has handled other recent situations, including Daniel Gafford’s return from a recurring ankle sprain under a 17-to-20-minute restriction.

Kidd did not indicate that Davis’ absence would be prolonged, reinforcing the idea that the move was precautionary rather than reactionary.

Frontcourt Picture Without Anthony Davis

Dallas’ frontcourt remains in flux. Dereck Lively II is out for the season and will undergo right foot surgery, while Daniel Gafford is easing back into action on limited minutes following multiple ankle aggravations.

Those circumstances leave the Mavericks navigating each game with flexibility rather than certainty, especially on short road trips like Monday’s stop in Utah.

Looking Ahead

For now, Davis’ status remains fluid. The Mavericks will monitor his response over the coming days before determining next steps, with no indication that the injury will require extended absence.

As Kidd summarized succinctly, the focus remains on feel and recovery rather than deadlines ahead of Thursday’s matchup against the Detroit Pistons.

“We’ll see,” he said.
