Daniel Gafford Returns Against Utah Jazz As Dallas Mavericks Rule Out Anthony Davis, Brandon Williams

The Dallas Mavericks will enter Monday night’s road matchup against the Utah Jazz navigating another shift in availability, even as one key piece returns to the lineup.
Daniel Gafford is available after missing three games with a right ankle sprain, but he will return on a 17–20 minute restriction. At the same time, Anthony Davis and Brandon Williams were ruled out after both appeared in Friday’s win over the Brooklyn Nets, forcing Dallas to adjust its rotation on short notice.
Despite the changes, the Mavericks arrive in Utah having won five of their last six games, leaning on adaptability as much as continuity.
Daniel Gafford Back Following Cautious Reset
Gafford’s return comes after his most deliberate recovery stretch of the season. His last appearance ended Dec. 3 against the Miami Heat, when he collapsed late after aggravating the same right ankle injury for the third time since training camp.
This time, Dallas opted for patience. Gafford received 12 days of rest and rehabilitation — his longest uninterrupted recovery window since missing a month before making his season debut Nov. 1.
Even with his status upgraded entering Monday, Gafford avoided committing to his availability at shootaround.
“Give or take. We’ll see,” he said.
That restraint reflects lessons learned earlier in the season, when shortened recovery timelines led to repeat setbacks.
“It’s a bit of a balanced scale,” Gafford said. “I want to be out there on the floor as much as I can. But at the same time, you have to listen to your body, especially through the course of a season.”
In 15 games this season, Gafford has averaged 8.9 points, 6.4 rebounds and 1.4 blocks, production Dallas has often had to replace by committee during his absence.
Jason Kidd Explains Anthony Davis, Brandon Williams Status Change
The Mavericks will be without Anthony Davis on Monday after he was listed out with a left calf contusion suffered during Friday’s win over Brooklyn. Davis has been a central figure when available, averaging 20.0 points, 10.5 rebounds and 3.2 assists in 11 games.
Head coach Jason Kidd framed the decision as day-to-day.
“We’ll see,” Kidd said. “Hopefully he feels better tomorrow & we’ll see how it goes during the week. That’s it. We’ll see how he feels.”
Brandon Williams was also ruled out after waking up with right Achilles soreness. Williams has averaged 10.8 points and 4.2 assists in 24 games.
“He just woke up with soreness,” Kidd said. “He’s out & hopefully he feels better tomorrow & the next day. Hopefully he’s not out long.”
D’Angelo Russell remains out with illness.
Point Guard Duties Shift to Nembhard, Wings Asked to Create
With Kyrie Irving continuing his recovery from ACL surgery and D’Angelo Russell unavailable, Ryan Nembhard is expected to shoulder a heavy workload at point guard.
Nembhard, on a two-way contract, has started at the position in recent games and will again be relied upon to organize the offense. In seven starts this season, he has averaged 12.7 points and 6.6 assists, providing steadiness amid constant rotation turnover.
However, Dallas’ approach will not rest solely on one ball handler. With backcourt options limited, the Mavericks are expected to lean more heavily on their wings to initiate offense and relieve pressure. Cooper Flagg, Naji Marshall, P.J. Washington, and Max Christie are all likely to see increased ball-handling responsibilities as Dallas looks to distribute playmaking across the lineup.
Season-Ending Injuries Continue to Shape Dallas Mavericks’ Rotation
The short-term absences add to a growing list of long-term losses that have reshaped the Mavericks’ roster.
Dereck Lively II will miss the remainder of the season and is expected to undergo right foot surgery. Danté Exum is also out for the season following right knee surgery.
In addition, Kyrie Irving remains sidelined as he continues to rehab from ACL surgery, further limiting continuity in the backcourt.
Center Depth Remains in Flux
With Lively out for the year, Davis unavailable, and Gafford on restricted minutes, Dallas continues to evaluate its remaining frontcourt options.
Moussa Cissé remains part of that picture. The two-way center reinforced his readiness during a recent G League assignment with the Texas Legends, recording 16 points, 16 rebounds and four blocks in 27 minutes.
Cissé has since rejoined the Mavericks for the Utah trip, positioning him as a depth option as minutes and matchups are managed.
Adjusting on the Fly
The Mavericks’ injury report reflects the reality of their season: progress paired with constant adjustment. Even with Davis and Williams sidelined for this matchup, Dallas has continued to compete through role clarity, workload management, and shared responsibility.
With Gafford easing back, Nembhard steering the offense, and wings absorbing expanded duties, the Mavericks will again rely on adaptability as much as availability in Utah.
