‘Hopefully He’s Not Out Long’: Dallas Mavericks Rule Out Brandon Williams Amid Achilles Injury

The Dallas Mavericks will be without Brandon Williams on Monday night, opting for caution after the guard woke up with right Achilles soreness following Friday’s win over the Brooklyn Nets.
Williams played in that game, but the soreness emerged afterward, prompting the Mavericks to rule him out for the road matchup against the Utah Jazz rather than risk further aggravation. Head coach Jason Kidd framed the decision as precautionary and expressed optimism about a quick return.
“He just woke up with soreness,” Kidd said. “He’s out and hopefully he feels better tomorrow & the next day. Hopefully, he’s not out long.”
Brandon Williams’ Importance Amid Backcourt Turnover
Williams has carved out a steady role for Dallas during a season marked by constant backcourt changes. In 24 games, he has averaged 10.8 points and 4.2 assists, often serving as a stabilizing presence when the rotation has been thin.
With Kyrie Irving still sidelined as he recovers from ACL surgery and D’Angelo Russell out with illness, Williams’ absence further compresses Dallas’ guard options for the Utah matchup.
A Precautionary Decision By the Dallas Mavericks
The Mavericks did not indicate that Williams’ injury would require an extended absence. Kidd’s comments suggested the decision was made out of an abundance of caution, particularly given the team’s broader injury situation.
Dallas has taken a similar approach in recent weeks, choosing rest and monitoring over pushing players through short-term issues that could linger.
Adjusting Without Brandon Williams
With Williams unavailable, the Mavericks are expected to lean more heavily on Ryan Nembhard at point guard, with additional playmaking responsibilities spread across the wings. Cooper Flagg, Naji Marshall, P.J. Washington, and Max Christie are among the players positioned to help shoulder ball-handling duties as needed.
Despite the shifting lineup, Dallas enters the game having won five of its last six games, a stretch that has required flexibility and shared responsibility across the roster.
Day-to-Day Outlook
For now, Williams’ status will continue to be evaluated day-to-day. The Mavericks will monitor how his Achilles responds over the coming days before determining next steps.
As Kidd summarized, the focus remains on recovery rather than urgency ahead of Thursday’s matchup against the Detroit Pistons.
