Arike Ogunbowale Out vs. Los Angeles Sparks as Dallas Wings Continue Play-by-Committee Approach

The Dallas Wings (9-24) will again be without guard Arike Ogunbowale when they face the Los Angeles Sparks (15-17) on Friday night at College Park Center. The four-time All-Star has been ruled out with a right knee injury after also missing Tuesday’s road win over the Indiana Fever.
Ogunbowale did not participate in Thursday’s practice, with Maddy Siegrist continuing to get first-team reps in her place. Paige Bueckers (back) and Aziaha James (right foot) are both probable, while Tyasha Harris (left knee) remains out for the season.
It marks the second straight game Dallas will play without its leading playmaker, who has averaged 15.5 points, 2.5 rebounds, 4.1 assists, and 1.3 steals this season while shooting 36.4% from the field. Her absence against Indiana forced Dallas to take a step-up-by-committee approach, which Siegrist said was embraced by the entire roster.
“Obviously, without Arike tonight we kind of knew it was going to be step-up-by-committee,” Siegrist said after Tuesday’s win. “It feels good when shots go in. I’m just trying to be more consistent.”
That formula worked in one of the team’s most complete performances of the season — an 81–80 win that snapped a five-game losing streak. Playing without Ogunbowale, the Wings led by as many as 17 points, had 25 assists on 30 made field goals, and relied on career-high scoring nights from Siegrist (22 points) and Li Yueru (20 points) to hold off a late Fever rally.
Maddy Siegrist Finding Rhythm After Injury
After missing 18 games recovering from a knee injury, Siegrist has been in top form since returning to the lineup on Aug. 5. Over the last four games, she has averaged 14.8 points while shooting over 61 percent from the field. She matched her career high with 22 points in Tuesday’s win, draining a career-best three triples. Prior to her injury, she was averaging 9.4 points on 43.3 percent shooting.
“As a team, I thought we really stuck together down the stretch,” Siegrist said after Thursday’s practice. “We’ve been in that situation a lot of times, and it’s gone the other way — we lose that game by eight. So just to be able to… you don’t want to lose the lead at any point, but to come out on the other side and defensively do a really good job was big.”
Siegrist’s outside shot also clicked in Indiana. She hit three three-pointers as part of a balanced scoring effort.
“Happy to see it go in,” she said. “I do the same routine every day. Sometimes you don’t get the results you want, but obviously I was happy to have a couple go in.”
Defensive Mindset Without Arike Ogunbowale
The win over Indiana showed the defensive identity Dallas is trying to carry forward with Arike Ogunbowale out. Rookie JJ Quinerly sealed the victory with a tightly contested stop on Kelsey Mitchell’s potential game-winner, and the Wings forced 18 turnovers that led to 27 points.
“When your leader is out, you saw a different level of compete right from the get-go,” head coach Chris Koclanes said. “We want to channel that every game regardless of who’s available. Finding that physicality — we weren’t perfect, but we had a more consistent desire to compete on the defensive end.”
Quinerly said the team’s defensive improvement has come from “having intention in our base and in our terminology — being up the floor, flowing in the gaps, congesting the floor — and honestly just being aggressive to whatever teams throw at us.”
Los Angeles Sparks Present Versatile Challenge
The Sparks enter Friday’s game with a balanced attack led by Kelsey Plum, Dearica Hamby, and versatile frontcourt options like Rae Burrell and Azurá Stevens. Koclanes said defending both the paint and the three-point line will be critical.
“They’re up there in points in the paint and get to the free throw line a ton,” Koclanes said. “With Hamby in a lot of the action and Burrell spacing, it’s about seeing the play earlier and reacting that extra half-second faster.”
Friday’s tipoff involving the Wings and Sparks is set for 6:30 p.m. CT on ION.
