Dallas Wings’ Azzi Fudd Out vs. Atlanta Dream ‘Out Of An Abundance Of Caution,’ Jose Fernandez Says

DHJ Quick Take: Caution Over the No. 1 Pick

  • The Downgrade: After being listed as “probable” all day, Azzi Fudd’s late downgrade to “out” cast a shadow over her anticipated home debut. Jose Fernandez cited an “abundance of caution,” signaling that the franchise is prioritizing her long-term availability over the adrenaline of a sold-out home opener.
  • Medical Silence: Fernandez was firm in declining specifics on Fudd’s medical status or practice activity. While he maintained there were “no concerns whatsoever” during the draft process, the right knee designation on the No. 1 pick will inevitably draw scrutiny given her collegiate injury history.
  • Rotation Dominoes: Without Fudd’s perimeter gravity, the Wings lose a key spacing element. Expect Aziaha James to see a significant spike in bench minutes, while Maddy Siegrist and Alysha Clark shift into hybrid “wing” roles to provide defensive length against Atlanta’s guard-heavy attack.
  • Speeding Up Awak: The absence also forces Awak Kuier into a larger role sooner than expected. Despite limited reps since her arrival from overseas, Fernandez noted that speeding up her integration is now “very, very important” to maintain the team’s frontcourt depth.
  • Adjusting Without Fudd: Coming off a 107-point performance led by Paige Bueckers, Arike Ogunbowale, and Odyssey Sims, the Wings will look to overcome not having the rookie sharpshooter.

ARLINGTON, Texas — Rookie guard Azzi Fudd has been downgraded from probable to out for the Dallas Wings‘ home opener against the Atlanta Dream on Tuesday at College Park Center, the team announced ahead of tip-off. Fudd will miss the game with a right knee injury.

Fudd had been listed as probable on the team’s earlier game status report. The downgrade comes one game into her professional career after the No. 1 overall pick of the 2026 WNBA Draft made her regular-season debut Saturday in Dallas’s 107-104 road win over the Indiana Fever.

The former UConn guard joined Dallas as the top selection out of the 2026 draft class and entered the season as one of the Wings’ headline additions alongside reigning WNBA Rookie of the Year Paige Bueckers.

Jose Fernandez Cites ‘Abundance of Caution’ on Azzi Fudd Decision

Head coach Jose Fernandez, addressing Fudd’s status at his pregame availability, said the decision to hold the rookie out Tuesday was driven by the long view of the season rather than a specific in-game setback. Fudd played limited minutes in her debut Saturday before being downgraded ahead of the home opener.

“In the opening night, out of an abundance of caution and her long-term health, we’re keeping her out tonight,” Fernandez said.

Fernandez declined to provide specifics on Fudd’s medical status, what she has or has not done in practice, or a timetable for her return. He said he had spoken with the rookie by phone earlier in the day, and that the priority remains positioning her for a productive first WNBA season.

“I’m not going to discuss anything medically in regards to her or what she has done in practice, what she hasn’t done in practice,” Fernandez said. “She’s a big part of this team. There’s a reason why we drafted her number one, and she’s going to have a great season for the Wings.”

Asked how he managed the disappointment of a player missing her first home game, Fernandez said the conversation was constructive.

“She was great. I was on my way here, and we had a very good phone call,” Fernandez said. “The most important thing for her, like I said, it’s a long season. She just finished playing a long season, right? And we have to put her in the best position to be successful.”

Fernandez also said the franchise had no concerns about the knee entering the draft process, when Dallas held the No. 1 overall pick and ultimately selected Fudd out of UConn after her national championship run.

“I’m sure the front office and strength and conditioning and sports medicine and everybody does their due diligence, right? But there weren’t any concerns whatsoever,” Fernandez said.

Dallas Wings’ Backcourt Rotation Without Azzi Fudd

With Fudd unavailable, Fernandez said the Wings will lean on extended minutes from Bueckers, four-time All-Star guard Arike Ogunbowale, and second-year reserve Aziaha James, while shifting forwards Maddy Siegrist and Alysha Clark into perimeter minutes to backfill the rotation. Forward Awak Kuier, who has had limited practice reps since joining the team after overseas commitments, will also see expanded availability.

“I think you’re looking at some extended minutes probably for Arike, right? Aziaha James extended minutes,” Fernandez said. “Now, AC will probably have to play some wing. Maddy will have to play some wing, and we’ve tried to speed up Awak as much as possible, right? That’ll be very, very important.”
