Chicago Sky Announce Punishment for Angel Reese After Viral Comments
Two-time WNBA All-Star Angel Reese of the Chicago Sky won’t play in the first half of Sunday’s game against the Las Vegas Aces.
Reese made statements detrimental to the Sky during an interview with the Chicago Tribune.
Reese is averaging 14.7 points and 12.6 rebounds this season while shooting 45.8% from the field, 18.2% from beyond the arc and 75.6% from the free-throw line.
The Sky will miss the playoffs again this year. They are one of the worst teams in the WNBA.
Reese was the seventh overall pick in the 2024 WNBA Draft out of LSU. She has career averages of 14.1 points, 12.9 rebounds, 2.7 assists, 1.4 steals and 0.6 blocks with the Sky.
Chicago is only 21-43 when Reese plays.
During an interview with the Chicago Tribune, Reese said the Sky “have to get good players” and that she could leave the franchise if things don’t get better.
Chicago players are now upset at Reese, according to Annie Costabile of Front Office Sports.
“Multiple league sources told FOS the entire team has seen Reese’s comments and that teammates are unhappy with the direct attacks,” Costabile wrote. “A team meeting is planned at which players are expected to address Reese directly.
“Multiple WNBA executives who spoke to FOS characterized Reese’s comments on her teammates as unprecedented. While conversations about roster construction and necessary changes happen frequently internally, it’s rare for a player to air them publicly.
“Reese’s motor, rebounding, and defense have been heralded by executives and coaches across the league. But multiple league sources told FOS their view is that some franchises will weigh her skills on the court against her conduct off of it.”
A WNBA exec ripped Reese during a conversation with DallasHoopsJournal after Reese’s comments to the Chicago Tribune went viral.
“She’s not good enough to talk like that yet,” the WNBA exec said. “You can’t throw your teammates under the bus while you’re barely shooting over 40% and can’t hit a jumper to save your life. This is a really bad look for her. I wouldn’t be surprised if she’s traded this offseason.”
Reese signed a four-year, $324,383 contract with the Sky after getting drafted.
