The Dallas Mavericks announced Saturday that they have converted center Moussa Cissé to a Two-Way contract after an impressive preseason showing that highlighted his defensive presence and development throughout training camp.

Cissé, who joined the Mavericks on July 8 after a five-year college career spanning Memphis, Oklahoma State, and Ole Miss, becomes the team’s third two-way player alongside Ryan Nembhard and Miles Kelly. Per team policy, terms of the deal were not disclosed.

Through three preseason games, the 6-foot-10 center totaled six points, 12 rebounds, and a team-high seven blocks, earning praise from head coach Jason Kidd for his effort and consistency.

Jason Kidd: “He’s Earned It”

Following Saturday’s practice, Kidd confirmed that Cissé’s contract conversion was well-deserved after weeks of steady growth and standout defensive performances.

“It’s great. He’s earned it,” Kidd said. “He’s had a heck of a preseason and training camp. What he’s done in practice and in games has been at a high level. We’re really excited to have him.”

Kidd added that Cissé’s reaction to the news was one of pure surprise.
“It was great — he didn’t know,” Kidd explained. “I think he thought he was getting cut. Before practice, we brought everyone in. I started by saying we had to let some people go yesterday, and I think he thought he was next. Then we told him he made the team, and his reaction was incredible. Just pure joy.”

Moussa Cissé: “A Dream Come True”

For Cissé, the moment represented the culmination of years of work and faith.

“It feels great,” Cissé said. “After all the hours in the gym, having an opportunity like this — it’s a dream come true. I’m really grateful.”

Cissé credited Anthony Davis, Daniel Gafford, and Dwight Powell for their mentorship during camp, as well as D’Angelo Russell for helping him adjust to the NBA’s pace.

“AD’s one of the greatest players in the league, so learning from him means a lot,” Cissé said. “Even back in Vancouver, we worked out together after practice. He taught me a lot of little things — how to stay low, stay balanced, and finesse around the rim.”

Cissé added that he plans to continue building his game around defense and energy.

“I love being a defensive anchor — bringing energy and making sure opponents feel me every night,” he said. “I want people to say, ‘We’re playing against Moussa today.’ That’s what drives me.”

Injury Updates and Rotation Outlook

Kidd also provided updates on several players ahead of Wednesday’s season opener in San Antonio.

Brandon Williams and Caleb Martin both practiced in full and are “trending in the right direction,” while Daniel Gafford participated in non-contact drills. Kyrie Irving and Danté Exum remained sidelined.

“If we’re completely healthy, no one needs to play 40 minutes,” Kidd said. “The first goal is to get consistent with a rotation and build rhythm. Then we’ll evaluate after about 10 games.”

With the preseason behind them, the Mavericks’ roster stands at 18 players, including three on two-way deals. Cissé’s emergence as a rim protector and defensive anchor adds another layer to Dallas’ evolving frontcourt depth entering the regular season.
