DeWanna Bonner Expected to Join Phoenix Mercury, Sits Courtside Amid Rumors

DeWanna Bonner’s next chapter appears to be coming full circle — and she’s already back in the building.

The six-time WNBA All-Star was seated courtside at PHX Arena on Monday night during the Phoenix Mercury’s matchup against the Dallas Wings, just hours after reports surfaced that she is expected to rejoin the Mercury in the coming days. A league source told DallasHoopsJournal.com that Bonner’s return to Phoenix is “imminent,” though a formal agreement has not yet been announced.

Bonner, 37, was waived by the Indiana Fever on June 25 after a brief nine-game stint with the franchise. Her departure was described as mutual.

“Despite our shared goals and excitement heading into the season, I felt the fit did not work out,” Bonner said in a statement at the time. “I appreciate the organization’s willingness to grant my request to move on.”

A fan favorite in Phoenix, Bonner spent the first 10 seasons of her career with the Mercury after being drafted No. 5 out of Auburn in 2009. She won two WNBA championships during her time there and earned three Sixth Woman of the Year awards before becoming a full-time starter in 2012.

Her potential return would bolster a Mercury squad that entered Monday’s game with a 12–6 record, tied with the New York Liberty for second in the league standings. Phoenix is currently without several key contributors, including Kahleah Copper (hamstring), Satou Sabally (shoulder), and Lexi Held (ankle).

Bonner was one of Indiana’s most notable offseason additions but saw a reduced role with the Fever, starting just three of the nine games she played. She averaged 7.1 points, 3.8 rebounds, and 1.6 assists before stepping away for personal reasons.

In 15 previous WNBA seasons, Bonner has averaged 14.8 points, 6.1 rebounds, and 2.3 assists across 511 regular-season games. She has also appeared in 87 playoff games, where her postseason averages include 13.7 points and 6.8 rebounds.

DeWanna Bonner’s courtside presence Monday was the latest signal that her Mercury homecoming is not only possible — it’s already underway.
