Sources: Dallas Mavericks’ Dwight Powell Exercises Player Option Ahead of Deadline

Dallas Mavericks center Dwight Powell exercised his $4 million player option for the 2025–26 season ahead of the June 24 deadline, sources told DallasHoopsJournal.com. The decision finalizes the third and final year of the three-year, $12 million contract he signed ahead of the 2023–24 season.

Powell, who turns 34 in July, is the Mavericks’ longest-tenured player and currently ranks fifth in franchise history in regular-season games played (700), trailing only Dirk Nowitzki, Brad Davis, Derek Harper, and Rolando Blackman. He has also appeared in 44 playoff games for Dallas.

While his on-court role has diminished in recent seasons, Powell remained a fixture in the rotation throughout the 2024–25 campaign, averaging 2.1 points, 2.1 rebounds, and 1.0 assists in 10 minutes per game across 55 appearances. Barring a roster change, he is expected to slot behind Anthony Davis, Dereck Lively II, and Daniel Gafford on the frontcourt depth chart next season.

Despite limited minutes, Powell’s value to the team extends beyond the floor. With Dallas widely expected to select Cooper Flagg with the No. 1 pick in next week’s NBA Draft, Powell’s veteran presence only helps. His familiarity with head coach Jason Kidd’s system and steady locker room presence are seen as assets during a transitional period for the franchise.

Powell’s expiring contract could also serve as a trade chip in future roster maneuvers. With a $4 million salary, his deal provides the Mavericks with additional flexibility as they continue shaping their roster around Flagg, Davis, and Kyrie Irving.

Initially drafted by the Charlotte Hornets and acquired by Dallas in a 2014–15 trade with Boston, Powell has filled a wide range of roles over his Mavericks tenure — from starting center to backup big to veteran mentor. If he remains on the roster through next season, he will become eligible for a contract extension during the 2025–26 campaign.
