DHJ Quick Take: The Price of a Generational Pivot
- The High Stakes of Sacrifice: To acquire a generational talent like Giannis Antetokounmpo, Cleveland must be willing to part with Evan Mobley, the 2025 Defensive Player of the Year. While Mobley is the ultimate cornerstone for a Milwaukee rebuild, his offensive stagnation makes him the logical, albeit painful, trade chip for a Cavs team desperate to maximize Donovan Mitchell’s window.
- Bucks’ Looming Reset: Following a disastrous 32-50 campaign and a trade deadline where Giannis ultimately stayed put, Milwaukee is at a crossroads. A package featuring a 24-year-old elite defensive anchor like Mobley offers the Bucks a more sustainable path than a flurry of late-round picks from other suitors.
- Navigating the Apron Minefield: The deal’s biggest hurdle isn’t just talent—it’s the math. With the 2026-27 salary cap projected at $165 million and Cleveland currently over the second apron, the front office faces a complex “salary dump” summer to make the financials viable for a Giannis arrival.
To land a two-time MVP in the NBA, you need to be willing to sacrifice. That’s the nature of the market. Teams don’t like to move such players. Even if they’re forced into a corner, the market for such a player’s services will be robust. They never come cheap.
So, if Giannis Antetokounmpo gets moved this summer, it’ll be for a hefty sum. Any team acquiring him will have to understand that it’s going to be expensive. They may have to part with a young cornerstone player.
Could the Cleveland Cavaliers move Evan Mobley for him?
The Trade Proposal
Milwaukee Bucks receive:
- Evan Mobley
- 2031 First-Round Pick (CLE)
- 2032 First-Round Pick (Swap – CLE)
Cleveland Cavaliers receive:
- Giannis Antetokounmpo
Note: The Cavaliers would need to get under the Second Apron separately in order to execute this trade.
Why The Milwaukee Bucks Do The Deal
The Bucks could get more draft capital from another team. The Cavaliers only have so much to move.
That said, they won’t get a better young cornerstone than Evan Mobley. This season, he averaged 18.2 points, 9.0 rebounds, 3.6 assists, and 1.7 blocks per contest. Mobley is fantastic. Still, some critics have suggested that his offense has not developed enough during his time in the NBA.
OK…So? Mobley rightly won the league’s Defensive Player of the Year award last year. If his offense has permanently stagnated, he’s good enough to be one of the two-or-three highest paid players on a serious title contender. Moreover, he’s still just 24 with room to grow.
Should the Cavaliers even part with him?
Why the Cleveland Cavaliers Do the Deal
Last year, this would have been unthinkable. The Cavs looked like the best team in the NBA for some stretches of the year.
This year, they’ve regressed some. At 52-30, they’re still fielding a strong basketball team. That said, they have not felt like a title contender. Cleveland is running back a similar roster as last year, so it feels like this core has largely run its course.
So, why not pivot to the best player in the NBA who has any chance of being available? The Cavs may have to make additional moves to accommodate Antetokounmpo. That’s fine. If they put the right group around him and Donovan Mitchell, they’ll get back to title contention.
The Bigger Picture
In fact, the Cavs would have to do some maneuvering. As of now, they’re over the second apron of the salary cap. That means they can’t aggregate salaries to make a deal work.
Yet, this deal wouldn’t work on the first day of the summer either, since Antetokounmpo makes more money than Mobley. Cleveland would have to let several players walk in free agency and possibly make a salary dump trade.
Leave that aside. Where there’s a will, there’s generally a way on the NBA transaction market. If the interest between Antetokounmpo and Cleveland is mutual, there’s a real chance he plays for the Cavaliers next year.
Although he won’t come cheap.
