Sophie Cunningham was hit by a sex toy during the Indiana Fever-Los Angeles Sparks WNBA game on August 5, just days after she wrote on X, “stop throwing dildos on the court… you’re going to hurt one of us.”

On the latest episode of her podcast, Cunningham opened up about getting hit by the sex toy at Crypto.com Arena.

“I was at the free-throw line and the girl shot,” Sophie Cunningham said. “And then I felt something like kind of hit my foot and I thought it was just like someone kicked me or whatever. And like I looked down and it was a dildo and it like scared me. I like jumped up. … I lost all train of focus.”

A self-described cryptocurrency enthusiast told ESPN that he is part of the group that orchestrated the recent sex toy stunts. The stunts were meant to market a crypto coin that his online community created.

“It was more or less like an opportunistic approach to, you know, what is already trending,” he said. “Where is there already controversy and how do we intercept some of that attention? We wanted to really make memes funny again.”

The first sex toy was thrown during the Atlanta Dream-Golden State Valkyries game on July 29. On August 1, a sex toy was thrown onto the court during the Chicago Sky-Valkyries game.

On August 5, a sex toy was tossed from the stands at Barclays Center during the New York Liberty’s game against the Dallas Wings, but it failed to make it onto the court. That’s the same day Cunningham was hit by the sex toy during the Fever-Sparks game.

“The safety and well-being of everyone in our arenas is a top priority for our league. Objects of any kind thrown onto the court or in the seating area can pose a safety risk for players, game officials, and fans,” the WNBA said.

“In line with WNBA Arena Security Standards, any fan who intentionally throws an object onto the court will be immediately ejected and face a minimum one-year ban in addition to being subject to arrest and prosecution by local authorities.”
