‘He Was Consistent All Week’: Naji Marshall Earns Praise As Standout At Dallas Mavericks Training Camp

As the Dallas Mavericks wrapped up three days of training camp at Simon Fraser University, head coach Jason Kidd made it clear that one player left a strong impression.
“He was consistent all week on both sides of the ball,” Kidd said. “A lot of good things for Naji. I thought he was one of the guys that stood out this week.”
Kidd’s praise for Naji Marshall came after a stretch of physical, competitive practices that emphasized communication, rebounding, and defensive intensity. The 27-year-old forward, who joined Dallas this offseason, quickly established himself as one of the group’s most reliable two-way performers.
Marshall’s energy, attention to detail, and effort during scrimmages helped him earn early recognition from the staff — something that’s already become a theme across camp.
Naji Marshall Focused on Consistency and Mindset
For Marshall, the first week in Dallas was about proving reliability — not flash. He came into camp determined to show he could impact games through effort and versatility, setting an example with his preparation and competitiveness.
Marshall said his approach entering camp was simple: do whatever it takes to help the team win.
“Do whatever I can to help the team win,” Marshall said. “Stay locked in the whole season. Try to play all 82 games.”
He emphasized availability and consistency as his biggest priorities heading into the season. After averaging 13.2 points, 4.8 rebounds, and 3.0 assists last year, Marshall said he wants to build on that momentum with a deeper team structure around him.
“Just a testimony to the work,” Marshall said. “Motivation to work even harder this summer so I can top that and be better than that.”
Fit and Opportunity with Dallas Mavericks
The Mavericks’ revamped offense under assistant coach Jay Triano has given Marshall a clear lane to contribute. His ability to slash, defend, and make plays in space fits well within Triano’s motion-heavy system — something Marshall said became obvious within the first few practices.
“He spreads the floor and allows us to play our game,” Marshall said. “That helps me tremendously. We’ve got a lot of weapons, so playing with them is going to be amazing for me. I’m ready.”
He added that the coaching staff’s energy has matched the team’s personality — a detail he sees as vital to their chemistry.
“It’s amazing,” Marshall said. “I feel like the staff matches the roster we have. It’s a great coaching staff. They’ve been great all training camp and all summer.”
Marshall said Dallas’ combination of size and athleticism could make it one of the toughest defensive units in the league.
“We’ve got so much length,” Marshall said. “We can guard the perimeter, we can guard inside. It’s just amazing to talk about and even better to see it come to light. I’m itching for the season to start.”
Asked about expectations, Marshall didn’t hesitate.
“No ceiling,” he said. “The sky’s the limit. If we stay locked in, we can accomplish everything we want.”
The Mavericks will return to Dallas for a Sunday practice before opening the preseason Monday against the Oklahoma City Thunder at Dickies Arena in Fort Worth.
