Luka Dončić Breaks Kobe Bryant Los Angeles Lakers Scoring Record, Helps LeBron James Make NBA History Again

DHJ Quick Take

  • Luka Dončić Shatters Scoring Record: Dončić set a new Los Angeles Lakers franchise record for points in a single month by scoring 600 points in March, surpassing Kobe Bryant’s 2006 mark of 578.
  • LeBron James Becomes the NBA’s Winningest Player: With the victory over the Cleveland Cavaliers, James officially passed Kareem Abdul-Jabbar for the most total wins in NBA history (regular season and playoffs combined).
  • JJ Redick Joins Elite Coaching Company: By reaching 50 wins this season, Redick became the first Lakers coach since Phil Jackson to secure back-to-back 50-win seasons.

The last day of March was very, very special for Luka Dončić, LeBron James and Los Angeles Lakers head coach JJ Redick.

Not only did the Lakers beat the Cleveland Cavaliers to improve to 50-26 on the season, but Dončić also broke a Kobe Bryant scoring record, James made NBA history again and Redick etched his name next to the one and only Phil Jackson.

Let’s start with Dončić. The superstar scored 600 points in March, breaking Bryant’s Lakers record of 578 points in March 2006. Dončić played in 16 games in March. He averaged 37.5 points per game and helped the Lakers go 14-2.

Los Angeles went 15-2 in March, but Dončić didn’t play against the Washington Wizards on March 30 because of a suspension.

“If you don’t win, it doesn’t really mean anything,” Dončić said after the Lakers beat the Cavaliers. “So the run we’ve been on, it means a lot.”

Dončić leads the NBA in points and points per game. He’s averaging 33.8 points per game in his first full season with the Lakers, who are in third place in the rugged Western Conference standings.

LeBron Has the Most Wins in NBA History

Another day, another record for James. He now has the most wins in NBA history, passing Kareem Abdul-Jabbar.

James got the first win of his career during the 2003-04 season with the Cavaliers. Now, he has set the wins record against Cleveland.

1,229. That’s how many NBA games James has won, combining the regular season and playoffs. The future Hall of Famer is also the NBA’s all-time leader in points, field goals, games and minutes.

James is a four-time MVP, four-time champion and four-time Finals MVP. He’s arguably the greatest basketball player of all time.

The 41-year-old James is averaging 20.7 points, 6.0 rebounds and 7.0 assists per game this season. He continues to defy Father Time.

Redick Is First Lakers Coach Since Jackson to Get 50 Wins in Back-To-Back Seasons

Redick, one of the best shooters in NBA history, is the first Lakers coach since Jackson to get 50 wins in back-to-back seasons.

Los Angeles went 50-32 last season in Year 1 of the Redick era.

“Don’t deserve to be mentioned along with Phil or Pat [Riley] or any of those guys,” Redick said. “I’ve got a lot left to accomplish, for sure. … I’ve had the same [coaching] staff for the most part both years. I think just we are resilient and we’re resolved.”

The Lakers have six games left in the regular season. With Dončić, James and Austin Reaves leading the way, Los Angeles looks like a legitimate championship contender.
