Nikola Jokić Returns as Nuggets Face Luka-Less Mavericks in High-Stakes NBA Cup Showdown
Nikola Jokić returns from a three-game absence for the Nuggets in a pivotal NBA Cup clash against the Mavericks, who are without Luka Dončić.

DENVER — After initial uncertainty regarding his status, Denver Nuggets superstar Nikola Jokić will play in Friday’s NBA Cup matchup against the Dallas Mavericks, as reported by ESPN’s Shams Charania.
Jokić had missed Thursday’s practice for personal reasons and was listed as questionable, but the reigning three-time MVP is set to take the court as Denver looks to strengthen its group-stage position.

Jokić leads the Nuggets in points (29.7), rebounds (13.7), and assists (11.7) this season. His absence was evident during his one-game hiatus, but the Nuggets snapped a two-game losing streak with a win over Memphis earlier in the week.
“Aaron [Gordon] is still out, rehabbing,” Malone said Thursday. “Nikola was not at work today, being with his family. We’ll see where things stand tomorrow.”
While Jokić returns to action, Aaron Gordon remains sidelined with a right calf strain, and Vlatko Čančar (left knee sprain) is also out.
Mavericks Without Dončić
On the Mavericks’ side, Luka Dončić will miss their three-game road trip due to a right wrist sprain. The absence of Dončić places the spotlight squarely on Kyrie Irving, who has thrived when leading the Mavericks solo. Irving is averaging 29.4 points, 6.6 assists, and 5.0 rebounds in 12 games without Dončić since joining Dallas.
“Kyrie’s patience is key, whether he’s double-teamed or not,” Mavericks head coach Jason Kidd explained. “He knows when to involve his teammates and when to take the shot himself. His ability to read those situations and respond appropriately makes him crucial, especially when Luka is out. He’ll be ready for this challenge.”
Dallas also leans on Quentin Grimes and Jaden Hardy to step up in Dončić’s absence. Kidd mentioned the importance of perimeter contributions as Dante Exum (wrist surgery) remains out.
Group Stage Stakes
The matchup carries high stakes in the NBA Cup group stage, with the Nuggets and Mavericks entering with 1-1 records. A loss for Denver and a victory for the Warriors results in Golden State clinching the group.
Tipoff is scheduled for 8 p.m. CT at Ball Arena.
