The Sacramento Kings are interested in trading for Cleveland Cavaliers point guard Darius Garland, according to NBA insider Grant Afseth of DallasHoopsJournal.

The Kings need a floor general after trading De’Aaron Fox to the San Antonio Spurs last season.

“The Sacramento Kings have kept an eye on Darius Garland’s situation as they remain motivated to find a long-term answer at point guard following De’Aaron Fox’s departure, sources tell DallasHoopsJournal.com,” Afseth wrote. “Additionally, the intel from some NBA teams is a perception that Garland would like to run his own team again at some point.”

Garland is making $39.4 million this season. He’s averaging 16.9 points and 6.5 assists per game while shooting 37.9% from the field, 32.2% from beyond the arc and 87.8% from the free-throw line.

The Cavaliers are only 15-14. They haven’t played well at all after having the top record in the East last season.

Meanwhile, the Kings have been a walking disaster. They are 7-22, tied with the New Orleans Pelicans for the worst record in the Western Conference.

“Darius is the safest option on the trade market for a team seeking a point guard upgrade,” a source said. “There are teams who think he can handle more being put on his plate.”

Garland has spent his entire career with the Cavaliers. He was the fifth overall pick in the 2019 NBA Draft. The two-time All-Star has career averages of 18.8 points and 6.7 assists per game.

A Vanderbilt product, Garland underwent offseason toe surgery. He hasn’t looked quite like himself this season, as his field goal percentage is a career low thus far.

If the Cavaliers continue to struggle, it will be fascinating to see if they look to trade Garland or Jarrett Allen. Donovan Mitchell and Evan Mobley are untouchable in trade talks, sources said.
