According to Sam Vecenie of The Athletic, NBA executives believe Anthony Davis can swing the title race if the Dallas Mavericks trade him to the right situation.

Davis has been linked to the Detroit Pistons, Toronto Raptors and Atlanta Hawks.

“A potential Davis trade is the one — outside of the Giannis situation — that executives believe could swing the title race the most if he were dealt to the right situation,” Vecenie wrote. “If he were to end up in the right place in the Eastern Conference, there is a real belief that he could turn that team into a serious favorite. Imagine if he ended up in Boston, Detroit or Atlanta, all of which have the assets and pieces to swing a deal and make something like this work? Any of those teams would immediately vault to the top or near the top of the odds to win that side of the playoff bracket.”

The Mavericks are exploring the trade markets for Davis, Daniel GaffordKlay Thompson and D’Angelo Russell, sources told DallasHoopsJournal. Davis has been in trade rumors ever since Nico Harrison was fired as general manager.

A future Hall of Famer, Davis has played in only 21 games with the Mavericks since the blockbuster Luka Dončić trade last season. AD is averaging 19.8 points, 10.5 rebounds, 3.7 assists, 1.0 steals and 2.0 blocks per game in a Dallas uniform.

Davis is eligible for a four-year, $275 million maximum extension in August. The former Los Angeles Lakers big man is making $54.1 million this season. He’ll make $58.5 million next season and has a player option worth $62.8 million for the 2027-28 season.

A top 75 player of all time, Davis has appeared in just 12 games this season because of a left calf injury. He’s averaging 19.6 points, 10.8 rebounds, 3.1 assists, 1.3 steals and 1.8 blocks per game while shooting 50.5% from the field, 33.3% from beyond the arc and 70.2% from the free-throw line.

When he’s healthy, Davis is an elite two-way force. It will be fascinating to see if the Chicago native gets traded this season.
