The Sacramento Kings want to sign Russell Westbrook despite adding Dennis Schröder, according to NBA insider Brett Siegel of ClutchPoints.
Westbrook, who played for the Denver Nuggets last season, is an unrestricted free agent.
The Kings acquired Schröder from the Detroit Pistons in a sign-and-trade deal.
“The word from NBA Summer League regarding the Sacramento Kings is that they still want to add Russell Westbrook even after their sign-and-trade to acquire Dennis Schröder from the Pistons,” Siegel wrote.
Westbrook played in 75 games last season for the Nuggets, who lost to the Oklahoma City Thunder in the second round of the playoffs in seven games.
Westbrook averaged 13.3 points, 4.9 rebounds and 6.1 assists for Denver in the regular season while shooting 44.9% from the field, 32.3% from beyond the arc and 66.1% from the free-throw line.
A nine-time All-Star, Westbrook has played for the Thunder, Houston Rockets, Washington Wizards, Los Angeles Lakers, Los Angeles Clippers and Nuggets. The guard, who turns 37 in November, has the most triple-doubles in NBA history.
Westbrook has career averages of 21.2 points, 7.0 rebounds and 8.0 assists in 1,237 NBA games. He has yet to win a championship. Westbrook and the Thunder lost to the Miami Heat in the 2012 Finals in five games.
The Kings missed the playoffs last season. They traded De’Aaron Fox to the San Antonio Spurs in February and acquired Zach LaVine from the Chicago Bulls.
Westbrook played with Schröder on the Lakers and Domantas Sabonis on the Thunder. The future Hall of Famer also has a relationship with LaVine and DeMar DeRozan.
