LeBron James Sign-And-Trade Proposal Sends Los Angeles Lakers Star Back To Cleveland Cavaliers

DHJ Quick Take: Proposed LeBron Return to Cleveland

  • The Blockbuster Proposal: Eric Pincus of Bleacher Report has crafted a complex sign-and-trade scenario that would send LeBron James back to the Cleveland Cavaliers for a third and final career stint.
  • The Trade Breakdown: In the deal, Cleveland would land LeBron, Bronny James, Deandre Ayton, Jake LaRavia, Dalton Knecht and a $28 million trade exception, while the Los Angeles Lakers would receive Jarrett Allen, Dennis Schröder, Dean Wade and Sam Merrill.
  • LeBron’s Likely Paths: Barring a surprise retirement decision this offseason, the consensus among NBA league insiders is that LeBron will ultimately either re-sign with Los Angeles or orchestrate a return to his hometown franchise.

A blockbuster LeBron James sign-and-trade proposal sending the Los Angeles Lakers star back to the Cleveland Cavaliers this offseason has emerged.

Eric Pincus of Bleacher Report proposed the following sign-and-trade proposal between the Cavaliers and Lakers:

Cleveland Cavaliers receive: LeBron James, Bronny James, Deandre Ayton, Jake LaRavia, Dalton Knecht, $28 million trade exception

Los Angeles Lakers receive: Jarrett Allen, Dennis Schröder, Dean Wade, Sam Merrill

If LeBron doesn’t retire from the NBA this offseason, most individuals with inside information believe the NBA icon will either re-sign with the Lakers or return to the Cavaliers for a third and last stint.

Cleveland can only pay LeBron $3 million and LeBron is not interested in taking a drastic pay cut to come home, so a sign-and-trade is the best way for the Cavaliers and LeBron to come together again.

This massive trade proposal has LeBron and Bronny going home to Ohio to play with All-Stars Donovan Mitchell, James Harden and Evan Mobley. Meanwhile, Allen goes to the Lakers to play with Luka Dončić and Austin Reaves

“The deal would be consummated on July 6, after the NBA’s annual moratorium,” Pincus wrote. “The Cavaliers trigger a first-apron hard cap at $209.1 million—which means players like Allen, Schröder, and Merrill must go to get payroll down and allow Cleveland to flesh out reasonable bench depth. LeBron inks for three years, required in a sign-and-trade deal, to a contract worth $63 million that pays $20 million for 2026-27. LeBron and the Cavaliers could have a behind-the-scenes agreement that LeBron plays only a couple of seasons but receives his full compensation—similar to what the San Antonio Spurs did years ago with Tim Duncan at the end of his career.”

LeBron, of course, is the greatest player in Cavaliers franchise history. In two stints with the Wine and Gold, LeBron averaged 27.2 points, 7.3 rebounds, 7.3 assists, 1.6 steals and 0.8 blocks per game in the regular season and 30.1 points, 9.1 rebounds, 7.8 assists, 1.7 steals and 1.1 blocks per game in the playoffs. He won two MVPs and one Finals MVP and made 10 All-Star teams and 10 All-NBA teams with his hometown organization.

The Cavaliers defeated the 73-9 Golden State Warriors in the 2016 NBA Finals. LeBron and Co. are the lone team in NBA history to erase a 3-1 series deficit in the NBA Finals.

LeBron last played for Cleveland during the 2017-18 season. The Cavaliers lost to the Warriors in the 2018 NBA Finals and LeBron left home for the Lakers in free agency shortly after.

LeBron guided LAL to the 2020 championship. The Lakers also made the Western Conference Finals in 2023. The organization is now building around Dončić and Reaves and some reports have stated that LeBron’s relationship with Jeanie Buss and Rob Pelinka isn’t that good.

The Cavaliers got swept by the New York Knicks in the 2026 conference finals, while the Lakers got swept by the Oklahoma City Thunder in the second round.

LeBron played in 60 games this regular season for the Lakers. He averaged 20.9 points, 6.1 rebounds and 7.2 assists per game, once again proving that he has bested Father Time. In the 2026 playoffs against the Houston Rockets and Thunder, LeBron put up 23.2 points, 6.7 rebounds and 7.3 assists per game.

It would certainly be a remarkable story for LeBron to end his historic NBA career in Cleveland with his son, Bronny. No one knows what LeBron will do this summer. All eyes will be on The King once the 2026 NBA Finals end.
