Trae Young, Washington Wizards Open To Getting Extension Done This Offseason

Trae Young and the Washington Wizards are open to getting an extension done this offseason, according to NBA insider Ramona Shelburne of ESPN.
Young is making $45.9 million this season. The Oklahoma product can become an unrestricted free agent next offseason by declining his 2026-27 player option worth $48.9 million.
The Wizards have interest in a three-year framework, with compensation potentially in the $120 million range, sources told Grant Afseth of DallasHoopsJournal. There is an openness on both sides to explore a longer-term partnership after Young’s representation worked with the Wizards’ front office to land him at a preferred destination, sources told Afseth.
Young was traded by the Atlanta Hawks to the Wizards for CJ McCollum and Corey Kispert.
The 27-year-old Young has career averages of 25.2 points and 9.8 assists per game. He hasn’t played for the Wizards yet because of his quad injury.
A four-time All-Star, Young is averaging 19.3 points and 8.9 assists per game this season. The Hawks were only 2-8 with him in the lineup.
The Wizards are in deep rebuild mode, but that rebuild has now been accelerated a bit after acquiring Young.
“I came into a kind of similar spot that I did when I was a rookie, but I’m 27 now,” Trae Young told ESPN. “I’m more mature now. It may look and make me feel like I’m older because I’ve been around for a minute, but I’m not. I’m young enough where I can relate, but old enough I got enough experience. So I’m excited to be around some of these young guys.”
Key members of Washington’s young core welcome the opportunity to play alongside an elite passer like Young, sources told Afseth, viewing the pairing as a way to accelerate development rather than slow it. Young’s ability to bend defensive coverages creates a different level of offensive gravity that aligns with the Wizards’ developmental timeline.
