Dallas Wings vs. Indiana Fever Postgame Interviews: Paige Bueckers, Arike Ogunbowale, Odyssey Sims & Jose Fernandez (May 12, 2026)

DHJ Quick Take: Postgame Perspectives from Indy

  • Cohesive Efficiency: Jose Fernandez noted that the team’s 59.1% shooting percentage—the second-best in WNBA opener history—resulted from the roster’s immediate buy-in to a motion-heavy offensive identity and high-level ball movement.
  • Backcourt Synergy: Arike Ogunbowale and Paige Bueckers addressed their fit as a duo, emphasizing a commitment to playing “downhill” and creating for one another without either star having to defer.
  • Point Guard Tempo: Odyssey Sims highlighted her role in setting the early offensive pace with 8 first-quarter points, while Fernandez praised her defensive ability to contain elite perimeter threats.
  • Pressure Relief: Jessica Shepard was cited as the tactical key to beating Indiana’s traps; her 9 assists served as a vital “pressure release,” allowing the guards to maintain their scoring rhythm against double-teams.
  • The Championship Standard: Despite the win, the postgame tone remained disciplined. Both players and staff identified 17 turnovers and defensive communication as the primary areas for correction before the home opener.

INDIANAPOLIS — The Dallas Wings opened the 2026 season with a 107-104 road win over the Indiana Fever on Saturday at Gainbridge Fieldhouse, behind 22 points from Arike Ogunbowale in her first game in nine months, 20 each from Paige Bueckers and Odyssey Sims, and a near triple-double from Jessica Shepard.

After the game, head coach Jose Fernandez and guards Bueckers, Ogunbowale, and Sims met with reporters at Gainbridge Fieldhouse to discuss the win, the team’s offensive execution, and the defensive cleanup areas the team will carry into the home portion of the schedule. Dallas shot 59.1% from the field, the second-best mark in WNBA season-opener history, and the 107-104 final marked the first regular-season opener in league history in which both teams scored at least 100 points. The Wings return home Tuesday at 7 p.m. CT to host the Atlanta Dream in their home opener at College Park Center.

Fernandez addressed his regular-season debut as Wings head coach, the team’s offensive identity built on ball movement and 3-point shooting, the third-quarter rotations that allowed Indiana to erase a 9-point halftime deficit, and his decision to close the game with a veteran lineup featuring Sims, Ogunbowale, Bueckers, Shepard, and Alanna Smith. He also discussed Ogunbowale’s seamless return after she missed both preseason games, Bueckers’ processing under double teams, Shepard’s pressure releases against Indiana’s traps, the atmosphere at Gainbridge Fieldhouse, and the bench role for No. 1 overall pick Azzi Fudd.

Bueckers detailed her playmaking against Indiana’s double-team pressure, her 8-of-10 shooting performance and 1-turnover game, and her commitment to cleaning up the Wings’ 17 turnovers. She also broke down the team’s defensive priorities, including building a wall against Kelsey Mitchell‘s drives, offered her perspective on Shepard’s fit in free agency, and described how she and Ogunbowale plan to play off each other in the Wings’ backcourt without deferring.

Ogunbowale spoke about her first WNBA game in nine months, how she studied the Wings’ playbook from home while recovering from injury and playing overseas, and what it meant to share the backcourt with Bueckers and Sims. She also addressed Fernandez’s impact on the team’s trust and energy, the league’s new emphasis on freedom of movement after she picked up 3 fouls in the first half, and the depth of the Wings’ rotation that allowed each starter to share the scoring load.

Sims reflected on her first regular-season game with the Wings since 2024, her role setting the early offensive tempo at point guard with 8 first-quarter points, and her growing chemistry with Bueckers and Ogunbowale. She also discussed Fernandez’s personable coaching style, the team’s defensive cleanup areas, and how the Wings can build on the win as they prepare for the home opener.
