Minnesota Timberwolves ‘Ramping Up’ Pursuit Of LeBron James

DHJ Quick Take: Timberwolves ‘Ramping Up’ Pursuit of LeBron James

Minnesota has reached out to LeBron James‘ camp with a pitch centered on joining Anthony Edwards, LaMelo Ball, Jaden McDaniels and Rudy Gobert, according to The Athletic’s Jon Krawczynski.

  • What’s the latest? The Timberwolves have contacted James’ representatives about a title run built around their existing core.
  • Why does it matter? Landing James would instantly raise the ceiling on a team that reached back-to-back conference finals before a second-round exit this year.
  • Who else is in the mix? The Heat, Cavaliers, Nuggets, 76ers and Warriors are among the other teams tied to James this summer.
  • What’s next? James is expected to take his time on a decision, with no firm timetable reported as free agency continues.

The Minnesota Timberwolves have intensified their free agency push for LeBron James, making contact with the four-time champion’s representatives about a roster built around Anthony Edwards, LaMelo Ball, Jaden McDaniels and Rudy Gobert, according to Jon Krawczynski of The Athletic.

Krawczynski reported the Timberwolves have “ramped up” their effort to land James, with sources granted anonymity to discuss the ongoing talks describing an ambitious sales pitch: pair James with Minnesota’s core to chase a championship that could reshape the debate over who ranks as the greatest player in NBA history.

A Wide-Open Market

James is an unrestricted free agent after deciding not to return to the Los Angeles Lakers following 8 seasons, the longest tenure of his 24-year career. He is not expected to rush a decision. Klutch Sports founder and CEO Rich Paul, James’ longtime agent, laid out potential landing spots on his “Game Over” podcast with Max Kellerman, using a whiteboard that featured the Miami Heat, Cleveland Cavaliers, Denver Nuggets, Philadelphia 76ers and Timberwolves prominently. Paul has since told ESPN’s Dave McMenamin he has fielded interest from 27 teams. The Golden State Warriors have also emerged as suitors.

Team and league sources cautioned Krawczynski that Minnesota does not believe it is at the top of James’ list. The Timberwolves have little spending room below the second-apron hard cap, and Minneapolis could be a tougher sell than warmer or larger markets. Even so, the front office believes it can make a compelling basketball case if James’ top priority is chasing a title.

The Roster LeBron James Would Be Joining

Minnesota already reshaped its backcourt this offseason, acquiring Ball from the Charlotte Hornets in a deal that sent out multiple draft picks and pick swaps, giving Edwards a second All-Star-caliber shot creator alongside him. Gobert and McDaniels remain the anchors on defense. That frontcourt shuffle also left an opening at power forward, a spot James, even at 41, could theoretically fill as a small-ball four while doing “whatever he wants,” in the framing of Minnesota’s pitch to his camp.

The Timberwolves are coming off back-to-back trips to the Western Conference finals in 2024 and 2025 before a step back this past season. Minnesota finished 49-33, claimed the No. 6 seed, eliminated the Nuggets in 6 games in the first round, and then fell to the San Antonio Spurs in 6 games in the Western Conference semifinals.

James remains productive deep into his career. He appeared in 60 games during the 2025-26 regular season, averaging 20.9 points, 6.1 rebounds and 7.2 assists, and lifted those numbers to 23.2 points, 6.7 rebounds and 7.3 assists per contest in the playoffs.

Free agency is moving at its own pace this summer, and Paul has signaled there is no fixed timetable for James’ decision. Minnesota’s front office, led by Tim Connelly, has built a reputation for aggressive moves, and pairing that history with a genuine need at forward gives the Timberwolves’ pitch more substance than a typical long-shot flier.
