The Golden State Warriors want to sign LeBron James and pair him with Stephen Curry and Draymond Green.
However, according to Anthony Slater of ESPN, the Warriors don’t believe they’re at the top of James’ short list.
Green, who has the same agent (Rich Paul of Klutch Sports Group) as James, declined his $27.7 million player option for next season to become an unrestricted free agent this summer. The move gave the Warriors flexibility to pursue James in free agency.
Curry and James, two NBA icons, were teammates on Team USA in the summer of 2024. USA beat France in the gold medal game and James and Curry were a dynamic duo throughout the Olympics.
Warriors head coach Steve Kerr was the head coach of Team USA, so there would be plenty of familiar faces for James in Golden State.
However, many NBA insiders believe James wants to finish his legendary NBA career with the Cleveland Cavaliers. James has played for the Cavaliers twice (2003-10, 2014-18). He’s the greatest player in franchise history and was born and raised in Akron, Ohio.
Cleveland made the conference finals last season, losing to the New York Knicks in four games, while Golden State missed the playoffs. James would likely have a better chance at winning next season with the Cavaliers.
Arguably the best player in NBA history, James played in 60 games this past season, his 23rd year in the NBA. He averaged 20.9 points, 6.1 rebounds and 7.2 assists per game for the Lakers, who beat the Houston Rockets in the first round of the playoffs but lost to the Oklahoma City Thunder in the second round.
James, who has been in the NBA since 2003, is a four-time MVP, four-time champion and four-time Finals MVP. He’s the all-time leader in points, field goals, minutes and games.
It would be strange to see King James play for the Warriors since Curry and Green won three championships (2015, 2017, 2018) against James and the Cavaliers. Ending his career at home with the Cavaliers would be really cool to see.
A future Hall of Famer, James holds career averages of 26.8 points, 7.5 rebounds and 7.4 assists per game in the regular season and 28.2 points, 8.9 rebounds and 7.2 assists per game in the playoffs. It will be fascinating to see where the forward is playing next season.
