Sources: Anthony Davis, Trae Young May Not Play Much For Washington Wizards This Season

Anthony Davis and Trae Young may not play much, if at all, for the Washington Wizards this season, NBA sources told Grant Afseth of DallasHoopsJournal.
The Wizards are better suited to lose, as they must finish within the top eight of the 2026 NBA Draft order to retain their first-round pick.
Washington acquired Young from the Atlanta Hawks and Davis from the Dallas Mavericks. Both All-Stars are currently injured.
Young is recovering from a sprained right knee and bruised quadriceps, while Davis is out with ligament damage in his left hand.
Young is making $45.9 million this season. The Oklahoma product can become an unrestricted free agent next offseason by declining his 2026-27 player option worth $48.9 million.
Young and the Wizards are open to getting an extension done this offseason, sources told Afseth. The Wizards have interest in a three-year framework, with compensation potentially in the $120 million range. There is an openness on both sides to explore a longer-term partnership after Young’s representation worked with the Wizards’ front office to land him at a preferred destination.
The 27-year-old Young is averaging 19.3 points and 8.9 assists per game this season. The Hawks were only 2-8 with him in the lineup.
Davis is making $54.1 million this season. He’s eligible for a four-year, $275 million extension in August. The future Hall of Famer is averaging 20.4 points, 11.1 rebounds, 2.8 assists, 1.1 steals and 1.7 blocks per game this season. He’s appeared in just 20 games.
Rich Paul’s priority was to get an extension done for Davis in the offseason with the Mavericks, sources told Afseth, but it was unknown if the Mavericks would offer Davis an extension due to his age and injury history, which is why Paul wanted his client traded this season.
Most people around the NBA expect Paul to pursue an extension for Davis with Washington’s brass this offseason.
The Wizards are in 14th place in the Eastern Conference standings. They have won just 13 games as of this writing.
