Brandon Williams made his return to the Dallas Mavericks’ lineup from the concussion protocol Wednesday night, and his teammates noticed the difference immediately.
Williams had missed the Mavericks’ previous three games before suiting up in Wednesday’s 142-135 overtime loss to the Denver Nuggets at Ball Arena. He finished with 11 points, 6 assists, and 2 rebounds in 19 minutes off the bench.
P.J. Washington made clear how much Dallas had missed him.
“His pace,” Washington said. “We missed his pace, his quickness, his ability to get downhill, find others, and score. I think he was himself tonight. He’s just happy to be back, and we’re happy for him too. He’s just being himself and being the great player he is.”
Cooper Flagg echoed the sentiment, pointing to Williams’s return as a factor in Dallas committing just four turnovers — after giving the ball away 21 times Monday against Golden State.
“Brandon Williams coming back obviously helps with that, having the extra ball-handling out there,” Flagg said. “It was just a much better job of getting everybody organized and getting into our spacing.”
Williams is averaging 12.8 points, 2.9 rebounds, and 3.8 assists in 60 games this season. His near $2.3 million salary became fully guaranteed in January after hitting incremental guarantee dates before a full guarante on Jan. 10. He is set to be an unrestricted this summer.
He was not listed on Friday’s injury report ahead of the Mavericks’ road game against the Portland Trail Blazers, with tip-off set for 8 p.m. CT at Moda Center.
