The Milwaukee Bucks made a surprising move on Monday (3/23), waiving shooting guard Cam Thomas less than a month and a half after signing him.
Thomas appeared in 18 games with the Bucks. He averaged 10.7 points per game while shooting 43.1% from the field, 27.5% from beyond the arc and 75.4% from the free-throw line.
After the Bucks lost to the Los Angeles Clippers on Monday, Milwaukee head coach Doc Rivers spoke about the team’s decision to part ways with Thomas.
“It’s just a tough one, honestly,” Rivers said, via The Athletic. “We ran out of bodies. At the end of the day, there were guys we had to make a decision on, and I thought Cam was really good overall. And maybe someday, we’ll revisit, but where we’re at right now, not really in the hunt like when we signed him, we thought it was the right thing to do for the rest of the guys right now.”
When asked why Thomas fell out of favor with the coaching staff in Milwaukee, Rivers declined to go into detail.
“There are things that we don’t need to talk about,” Rivers said. “That’s not anybody’s business. Like I said before, that’s where as a coach, you have to make decisions on what’s the best thing for the team at that time.”
Thomas can sign with another team, but he’s ineligible to participate in the 2026 playoffs. The LSU product has appeared in 42 games this season with the Brooklyn Nets and Bucks. He’s averaging 13.5 points per contest and shooting 41.0% overall, 31.0% from 3 and 81.1% from the foul line.
Many people believe Thomas’ NBA career is likely over. After all, he’s been waived by two teams in less than two months.
The 24-year-old Thomas has career averages of 14.9 points, 2.4 rebounds and 2.1 assists per game with the Nets and Bucks. He was the 27th overall pick in the 2021 NBA Draft.
