DHJ Quick Take: McCollum Extension Gives Atlanta a Flexible Bridge
CJ McCollum’s one-year, $21 million extension keeps a proven scorer in Atlanta without compromising the long-term flexibility the Hawks want around Jalen Johnson. The figure closely tracks the framework Dallas Hoops Journal reported in January.
- Why did the Hawks extend McCollum? Atlanta valued him as a downhill ball-handler and secondary scorer who complements Jalen Johnson and chose to retain him rather than risk losing him in free agency.
- How does the deal affect Atlanta’s cap flexibility? The one-year term preserves future flexibility while lowering McCollum’s average annual value from his $30.67 million 2025-26 salary.
- What does the trade kicker add? The trade kicker gives McCollum added value if the Hawks move him before the contract expires.
- What’s next? Atlanta turns to Tuesday’s 2026 NBA Draft with its veteran backcourt question resolved.
Atlanta Hawks guard CJ McCollum has agreed to a one-year, $21 million contract extension that includes a 7.5% trade kicker, sources told Dallas Hoops Journal. The agreement covers the 2026-27 season and keeps McCollum from reaching free agency.
McCollum had been eligible to sign an extension through June 30, and the agreement settles one of the more closely watched contract questions on Atlanta’s board ahead of Tuesday’s 2026 NBA Draft.
Dallas Hoops Journal reported in January, shortly after McCollum was acquired from the Washington Wizards, that the veteran guard and the Atlanta Hawks held mutual interest in a one-year framework in the $20 million range, a concept viewed internally as a short-term bridge that preserved cap flexibility. The final figure was $21 million.
McCollum, 34, is a 13-year veteran whom Atlanta acquired alongside Corey Kispert in the January trade that sent Trae Young to Washington. He carried a $30.7 million salary in 2025-26, the final season of his previous contract, so the extension lowers his average annual value while keeping him in Atlanta on a flexible term.
CJ McCollum’s Fit With the Atlanta Hawks
CJ McCollum averaged 18.7 points, 3.3 rebounds, and 3.9 assists across 76 games split between Washington and Atlanta in 2025-26, shooting 45.5% from the field and 37.5% from 3-point range. In 41 regular-season appearances after the trade, including 25 starts, he averaged 18.7 points, 3.1 rebounds, and 4.1 assists in 28.8 minutes per game for the Hawks.
Atlanta values McCollum as a secondary ball-handler and downhill scorer who can complement Jalen Johnson over a longer term. Johnson emerged as the franchise centerpiece in 2025-26, averaging 22.5 points, 10.3 rebounds, and 7.9 assists while earning his first All-Star selection, and the Hawks reached the playoffs for the first time since 2022-23.
The one-year structure preserves the cap flexibility Atlanta prioritized when the front office discussed the framework in January, and the trade kicker gives McCollum added protection if he is moved before the deal expires. The term also aligns the veteran’s contract with Johnson’s developmental timeline without committing multiyear money to a 34-year-old guard.
Trae Young’s Contract Outlook in Washington
On the other side of the January trade, Trae Young is positioned to reach a new long-term agreement with the Washington Wizards. Young is expected to decline his $48.97 million player option for 2026-27 and sign a fresh multiyear deal and will re-sign with Washington.
Dallas Hoops Journal sources now place the framework in the four-year, $140 million range, up from the three-year, $120 million concept reported in January. Young, 27, averaged 15.2 points and 6.2 assists in five regular-season appearances with Washington after the trade while working through a minutes restriction.
Washington acquired Young to anchor its backcourt alongside a young core and the No. 1 overall pick in the 2026 NBA Draft, and a new contract would cement the four-time All-Star as the centerpiece of the rebuild.
