Sources: Dallas Wings to Sign Forward Amy Okonkwo to Seven-Day Hardship Contract

The Dallas Wings are signing 6-foot-2 forward Amy Okonkwo to a seven-day hardship contract, a source told DallasHoopsJournal.com. She will be available for Friday’s matchup against the Seattle Storm.

The move comes as Dallas continues to battle injuries that have left the roster depleted. Tyasha Harris (left knee surgery) and Li Yueru (left ACL sprain) are out for the remainder of the season, while four-time All-Star Arike Ogunbowale (right knee tendonitis) is sidelined without a timetable and will be re-evaluated in the coming weeks.

Set for First WNBA Regular Season Game

Okonkwo has yet to appear in a WNBA regular-season game. Following her standout career at TCU, she went undrafted and began her professional career overseas, building her reputation in Spain, France, Israel, and Mexico.

Her closest brush with the league came when she signed a training camp contract with the Connecticut Sun. She impressed during the preseason, appearing in at least two games.

On May 4 against the Seattle Storm, she logged 16 minutes, finishing with 10 points, four rebounds, and one assist. She added four points, four rebounds, and a steal in a May 9 preseason win. Despite the positive impression, she did not make the Sun’s regular-season roster.

Amy Okonkwo Brings International Experience

Okonkwo, 28, has established herself as a cornerstone of the Nigerian national team. She is a two-time FIBA AfroBasket MVP (2023, 2025) and has competed in both the 2020 Tokyo and 2024 Paris Olympics. Her performances have anchored Nigeria through multiple gold medal runs, earning her recognition as one of Africa’s most accomplished players.

A Fontana, Calif., native, Okonkwo played one season at USC before transferring to TCU, where she scored 1,324 career points to rank ninth in program history. She was named Big 12 Sixth Player of the Year in 2018.

After turning professional, she became a consistent performer in Europe. Most recently with Bourges in France during the 2024–25 season, she averaged 14.2 points and 5.2 rebounds while shooting nearly 48% from three-point range.

With the Wings short-handed, her signing provides immediate depth and marks another opportunity for Okonkwo to pursue her first official WNBA appearance.
