Dallas (9–33) is coming off an 84–80 loss to the Golden State Valkyries on Thursday. Paige Bueckers scored 27 points, surpassing Arike Ogunbowale’s rookie total from 2019 to become the Wings’ all-time rookie scoring leader with 650 career points. The Wings and Sparks have met three times this season, with each of the last two decided by just one point. On Aug. 20, Bueckers tied the WNBA single-game rookie scoring record with 44 points at Crypto.com Arena, but Kelsey Plum banked in a buzzer-beater to give Los Angeles an 81–80 win.

Paige Bueckers Makes Rookie History

Bueckers said her record-breaking night at Golden State was more about the team than individual glory.

“It’s really all about the team and the organization and how much they’ve embraced who I am — not just as a basketball player, but as a human,” Bueckers told DallasHoopsJournal.com. “That’s why I chose basketball: because it’s a team sport, and I get to share the floor with people I love and want to go to war with. However many points — if it’s zero, 15, 20 — I’m just happy to be out there with the team and to celebrate that together.”

Even as Dallas built a 13-point lead before falling late, she emphasized the importance of fighting.

“That’s what we want to show every night — fight,” Bueckers explained. “Regardless of who we have or what our record is, we’re focused on preparation, making sure we’re ready to play, and going to war with whoever’s out there. Having that fight every night is what we want our identity to be.”

Supporting Cast Steps Up

Haley Jones reflected on her journey after posting a versatile performance in her return to the Bay Area.

“It’s been a rollercoaster year for me personally,” Jones said to DallasHoopsJournal.com. “I started with the Dream, then Phoenix, then came here on a hardship, and came back again. That’s just been my journey, and I’ve tried to take it day by day. I’m really appreciative to the Wings for taking me in and making me feel like family, even when I was just here on a hardship.”

Myisha Hines-Allen pointed to Dallas’ execution, even as fatigue crept in during the late stages.

“I thought we executed very well in the clutch,” Hines-Allen said. “We got all the shots we wanted. From the board to the court, we executed exactly what the game plan was. It came down to small details. Defensively, offensively, I felt like we were getting the looks we wanted, but we just weren’t able to finish them.”

Maddy Siegrist also viewed the effort as encouraging against a playoff-caliber team.

“I think just hanging tough with them the whole time,” Siegrist explained to DallasHoopsJournal.com. “We had an opportunity a couple of times down the stretch to get over the hump, but they’re a great team. You can walk away from this knowing we battled the whole time with them.”

Chris Koclanes on Progress and Growth

Head coach Chris Koclanes said the Wings’ fight against Golden State showed the strides they’re making despite a difficult record.

“I thought we came in with the game plan and executed well,” Koclanes said to DallasHoopsJournal.com. “We made adjustments and tried to execute those, too. Down the stretch, you couldn’t have asked for better execution to put ourselves in position. We did a lot of good things and put ourselves ina position to win on the road in a tough environment. I’m proud of our fight.”

Koclanes added that the foundation being laid is what excites him most about the future.

“The future’s bright. Get on board if you’re not already,” he explained. “These women are incredible in what they do on and off the floor. I’m grateful to play a small part in this league. It’s only up from here.”

Paige Bueckers’ All-WNBA Candidacy

Beyond Rookie of the Year, Bueckers’ play has sparked conversation about whether she belongs on an All-WNBA team in her first season.

“She impacts winning and makes everybody on our team better,” Koclanes said to DallasHoopsJournal.com. “And she’s getting everybody’s best look — not just from one defender but multiple defenders. You’ve seen all the clips lately of everyone’s game plan: throw two, three, four, five bodies at her. To be able to handle that, for anybody but especially as a rookie going through this gauntlet the first time, it just speaks volumes about the type of player she is.”

Diamond Miller, who joined Dallas midseason, said the numbers only confirm what she has seen first-hand.

“She’s really a dynamic player,” Miller emphasized to DallasHoopsJournal.com. “She’s probably going to be MVP one day in this league. She’s really talented. I think she deserves it — first team, too.”

Jones emphasized how Bueckers elevates her teammates.

“I think that Paige is such a special player, not only because she can score in such variety — three levels, four, obviously she does all the little things — but I think she also does the right thing,” Jones detailed to DallasHoopsJournal.com. “At the end of the game, she could take the shot, and a lot of times she passes. She has faith in us. I think just her basketball IQ and making every single person around her better is insane.”

Siegrist pointed to her experience as a key reason Bueckers has adapted so well.

“She’s been seeing a little bit of everything all year long,” Siegrist told DallasHoopsJournal.com. “Especially coming from college, she saw everything for four years, so it’s translated great. She just makes the right plays every single time.”

Hines-Allen added that her growth in the pick-and-roll has been striking.

“It’s her progression of reading the defense, being aggressive, and taking what the defense gives her,” Hines-Allen said to DallasHoopsJournal.com. “Her aggression throughout the season, reading the defense, and taking shots she knows she can make — and we’re confident she can make them too — has been impressive.”
