According to NBA insider Jake Fischer of The Stein Line, Giannis Antetokounmpo told a Milwaukee Bucks teammate in the offseason that he believed a New York Knicks trade was close.

Antetokounmpo requested a trade from the Bucks in the offseason and wanted to get traded to the Knicks.

“Multiple sources have insisted this week that Antetokounmpo, during the summer, told at least one Bucks teammate that he believed a trade to the Knicks was quite close to materializing,” Fischer wrote. “Obviously no such trade did, but the Knicks continue to be cited as a team that must be mentioned in any credible discussion about the Antetokounmpo landscape.”

The Bucks have lost in the first round of the playoffs three years in a row.

Meanwhile, the Knicks made the conference finals last season for the first time since 2000.

The Knicks and Bucks discussed an Antetokounmpo trade before the season. If Antetokounmpo requests a trade from Milwaukee again, the NBA legend will be pursued by a bevy of teams.

A future Hall of Famer, Antetokounmpo is making $54.1 million this season. He has a player option worth $62.8 million for the 2027-28 season. The superstar forward doesn’t have a no-trade clause in his contract.

The Knicks and San Antonio Spurs will aggressively pursue an Antetokounmpo trade with the Bucks, NBA sources told DallasHoopsJournal.

Antetokounmpo, 30, is averaging 28.9 points, 10.1 rebounds and 6.1 assists per game this season while shooting 63.9% from the field and 63.5% from the free-throw line. He’s currently out with a right calf strain.

One of the greatest players in NBA history, Antetokounmpo is a two-time MVP, one-time Finals MVP, one-time Defensive Player of the Year and nine-time All-Star. He holds career averages of 24.0 points, 9.9 rebounds and 5.0 assists per game.
