Klay Thompson Prefers To Be Part Of A Contender If Dallas Mavericks Trade Him

According to NBA insider Shams Charania of ESPN, Klay Thompson prefers to be part of a contender if the Dallas Mavericks trade him.
The Mavericks are open to exploring the trade markets for Thompson, Anthony Davis, D’Angelo Russell and Daniel Gafford.
“Thompson, who joined Dallas during free agency in July 2024, was sold on joining the Mavericks to play alongside Luka Doncic and Kyrie Irving on a team coming off a run to the Finals,” Charania wrote. “With Doncic gone and the franchise winning at a below-.500 clip, teams across the league know Thompson prefers to be part of a contender over the remaining two years of his three-year, $50 million deal.”
One of the greatest shooters in NBA history, Thompson has appeared in 23 games for the Mavericks this season. The veteran shooting guard is averaging 11.0 points, 2.6 rebounds and 1.3 assists per game while shooting 36.6% from the field, 35.4% from beyond the arc and 80.0% from the free-throw line.
Thompson is making $16.7 million this season. He’ll make $17.5 million next season in the final year of his contract.
A four-time NBA champion, Thompson is averaging 13.2 points per game while shooting 38.2% from 3 in a Mavericks uniform. Dallas missed the playoffs last season after making the 2024 NBA Finals. The team is currently 9-16, good for only 11th place in the Western Conference standings.
Thompson doesn’t have a no-trade clause in his contract. The five-time All-Star, who turns 36 in February, scored a season-high 23 points against the Los Angeles Clippers on November 29.
