The Detroit Pistons have built one of the deepest and most balanced rosters in the Eastern Conference, but one flaw that continues to loom large as the NBA trade deadline approaches is their shooting. A name often floated as a possible solution is Klay Thompson, from the Dallas Mavericks, as a potential solution for teams seeking a veteran sharpshooter.

For all their athleticism, defense, and ball-handling, Detroit still lacks consistent floor spacing, and this weakness could very well be exposed in a playoff setting.

Why Klay Thompson Has Entered the Detroit Pistons’ Orbit

That reality is why Thompson has emerged as a compelling name in recent trade chatter. According to Yahoo Sports’ Kevin O’Connor, the Dallas Mavericks could make the veteran sharpshooter available as they pivot toward a retooling phase.

“Klay Thompson is quietly having a bounce-back year and playing at a high level,” O’Connor said. “When you look at how the Pistons use Duncan Robinson — off the ball, coming off screens, and even as an on-ball screener — Klay can do all of those things. Having another player who provides that kind of spacing threat could be very, very important for Detroit.”

At 35, Thompson no longer profiles as a cornerstone, but his skill set remains tailor-made for a contender seeking offensive balance.

Additionally, from Detroit’s perspective, the appeal is straightforward. Klay Thompson is still an elite movement shooter, averaging 7.7 three-point attempts in just over 25 minutes per game while converting 38.3 percent of them.

That level of volume and efficiency is something the Pistons simply do not have outside of Duncan Robinson. More importantly, Thompson’s gravity changes how defenses behave.

Klay Thompson Part of a Broader Dallas Mavericks Trade Picture

From Dallas’ side, Thompson’s name has surfaced alongside others as the franchise evaluates its options ahead of the deadline. League sources indicated to DallasHoopsJournal.com senior writer Grant Afseth that Anthony Davis, Daniel Gafford, Thompson, and D’Angelo Russell are all viewed as potential trade candidates as the Mavericks weigh short-term flexibility against long-term direction.

Coming off a strong recent stretch, Thompson continued to show signs of settling into rhythm Monday night, finishing with 14 points and five rebounds in 21 minutes against the Knicks. The outing followed back-to-back efficient performances against Utah, including a 26-point night and a 23-point effort earlier in the week.

Over his last seven games, Thompson has averaged 17.4 points, 2.7 assists, and 2.0 rebounds while shooting 50.0% from three-point range, a notable uptick from his season-long averages of 12.0 points, 2.4 rebounds, and 1.5 assists. Beyond the numbers, he has continued to serve as a steady veteran presence for Cooper Flagg, providing value that extends beyond the box score.

However, Thompson’s contract complicates the equation. He is owed approximately $17.5 million next season as part of his three-year, $50 million deal, a figure that could limit the market.

“Klay is going to make like $17.5 million next season,” one Eastern Conference executive said. “That’s going to give teams pause. I still think he can help a contender. It’s more about the money than impact.”

Much so, Dallas might not have all the time it could wish to plot a full reset, and decisions involving veterans like Thompson could come into sharper focus as the deadline nears.
