If LeBron James doesn’t retire from the NBA this offseason and chooses to leave the Los Angeles Lakers, his next team will not be the Golden State Warriors, according to Lakers Daily.
James is expected to re-sign with the Lakers or sign with the Cleveland Cavaliers if he plays next season.
Even though Warriors stars Stephen Curry and Draymond Green are close friends with James and people around the NBA expect the Golden State legends to recruit the Lakers forward, James is not interested in finishing his basketball career with the Dubs.
The Warriors beat James and the Cavaliers in the 2015, 2017 and 2018 NBA Finals. It would be strange to see James retire from the NBA with Golden State.
A four-time MVP, four-time champion and four-time Finals MVP, James hasn’t decided whether he will retire this offseason or continue playing. The NBA’s all-time leader in points and field goals is the league’s oldest active player. He turns 42 in December.
The prevailing thought in NBA circles is that James will leave the Lakers this offseason and sign with the Cavaliers to play alongside James Harden, Donovan Mitchell, Evan Mobley and Jarrett Allen. The Lakers are building around Luka Dončić and Austin Reaves. They are also expected to pursue a trade for Milwaukee Bucks superstar Giannis Antetokounmpo this offseason.
The Warriors are expected to pursue Antetokounmpo this offseason as well. They tried to trade for Antetokounmpo at this year’s trade deadline, but the Bucks never felt urgency to trade The Greek Freak. Antetokounmpo and Milwaukee will discuss their future again in the offseason.
Golden State won the 2022 championship against the Boston Celtics. The franchise hasn’t advanced past the second round of the playoffs since then. Jimmy Butler will miss the rest of the season after tearing his ACL, so all signs point toward the Warriors’ season ending early again.
