According to NBA insiders Anthony Slater and Tim MacMahon of ESPN, Dallas Mavericks guard Klay Thompson wants to play for a contender and a return to the Golden State Warriors one day could happen because of Stephen Curry.

“Those around Klay Thompson say they believe it could eventually happen because ‘there’s no one that carries more weight with Klay than Steph,’ one league source said,” Slater and MacMahon wrote.

“It would be unbelievable,” Curry said of the idea. “If that time comes and that conversation is had, of course I’m calling him and saying, ‘We want you back.’ And hopefully that would be a welcome message to him. But as we stand right now, that does seem like a far distant reality. But so did him leaving.”

Thompson is making $16.7 million this season. He’ll make $17.5 million next season in the final year of his contract.

The Mavericks, who are in 12th place in the Western Conference standings, are open to exploring the trade markets for Thompson, Anthony DavisD’Angelo Russell and Daniel Gafford.

One of the greatest shooters in NBA history, Thompson has appeared in 25 games for the Mavericks this season. The veteran is averaging 11.1 points, 2.6 rebounds and 1.3 assists per game while shooting 37.0% from the field, 36.1% from beyond the arc and 81.3% from the free-throw line.

A four-time NBA champion with the Warriors, Thompson is averaging 13.2 points per game while shooting 38.3% from 3 in a Mavericks uniform. Dallas missed the playoffs last season after making the 2024 NBA Finals.

Thompson signed with the Mavericks in the offseason of 2024 to play with Kyrie Irving and Luka Dončić. Dallas traded Dončić to the Los Angeles Lakers last season for Davis.

A future Hall of Famer, Thompson doesn’t have a no-trade clause in his contract. The five-time All-Star, who turns 36 in February, scored a season-high 23 points against the Los Angeles Clippers on November 29.
