Paolo Banchero Trade Rumors: A Bold Proposal To Solve The Magic’s Spacing Crisis With Michael Porter Jr.

DHJ Quick Take: The Orlando-Brooklyn Trade Proposal

  • Brooklyn’s High-Upside Gamble: For the Nets, this is the ultimate “buy-low” opportunity on a former #1 overall pick. Banchero’s inefficiency is a concern, but his 6-foot-10 frame and three-level scoring potential give Brooklyn a legitimate centerpiece to build around alongside rookie Drake Powell.
  • The “Midrange Logjam” Dilemma: Despite a solid 45-37 finish in 2026, the Magic’s offense remains hampered by a lack of elite floor spacing. With both Franz Wagner and Paolo Banchero operating primarily in the midrange, Orlando faces a fundamental choice: continue forcing a talent-heavy fit or pivot to a roster that maximizes Wagner’s franchise-level playmaking.
  • MPJ as the Perfect Valve: Adding Michael Porter Jr. would provide the “gravity” Orlando has lacked. Even with a slight dip to 36.3% shooting this season, Porter Jr. remains a top-tier threat whose presence would open the paint for Wagner.

The Orlando Magic may have to make a difficult choice between Paolo Banchero and Franz Wagner. In a sense, it’s a rich person’s problem. The Magic have two hyper-talented young players. Teams have been in worse situations.

Still, they don’t seem to complement each other. Banchero and Wagner both operate best in the midrange. They’re both below-average shooters. Unless one makes a radical improvement in that area, the Magic are likely to trade one eventually.

Could they get ahead of the problem by sending Banchero to the Brooklyn Nets this summer?

Why the Orlando Magic Do the Deal

Michael Porter Jr. should be a perfect fit alongside Wagner. Although, traditional position enthusiasts may disagree.

Sure, both play small forward primarily. That’s a moot point in 2026. If the Magic want to go big, they could run Porter Jr. at shooting guard. If they want to go agile, they can bump Wagner to power forward.

The more significant point is their complementary skillsets. Porter Jr. has high-end three-point gravity. His efficiency has declined this year. His 36.3% accuracy isn’t blowing anyone’s mind. That said, that number will surely rise once Porter Jr. is the second option behind Wagner. The key is he shot 9.3 attempts per game and is a career 39.8% perimeter shooter.

Should the Nets give up such a useful player?

Why the Brooklyn Nets Do the Deal

For the Nets, this is an opportunity to land a potential franchise player whose value on the open market is likely at an all-time low.

Let’s be clear: There’s a reason for that. Banchero has his warts. He’s inefficient. He’s not a strong defender. There’s a world where he never reaches the heights fans hoped for when he was selected first overall.

That said, he’s still 6-foot-10, strong, and able to score from all three levels. Banchero still has ample star player tools. If he can figure out how to use them consistently, this could be a steal for the Nets.

The Bigger Picture

This isn’t what the Magic expected. They thought they were picking their franchise player when they landed the top pick in the 2022 NBA Draft. That said, expectations are often wrong in the NBA.

Look at their 2021 draft. The Magic had the 5th and 8th picks. Orlando took Jalen Suggs first. He’s a great player, but nobody is building their offense around him. The same can’t be said for Wagner, their eventual 8th pick.

He’s looked like a franchise-level player, but he needs the right co-star.
