Dallas Wings vs. Washington Mystics Postgame Interviews: Arike Ogunbowale, Azzi Fudd, Jessica Shepard And Jose Fernandez (May 18, 2026)

DHJ Quick Take: Resilient Defensive Adjustments Spark Dallas’ Bounce-Back Performance

  • The Two-Day Structural Reconstruction: Dallas capitalized on a rare multi-day preparation window—consisting of a critical film session, two high-intensity team practices, and a tactical shootaround—to cement cohesive defensive connections for a newly formed roster that completely missed training camp.
  • Back-Line Help Rotations Suffocate Mystics’ Offense: Implementing a disciplined, high-communication scheme, the Wings’ back-line defenders executed precise help-and-recover rotations. By crowding the paint on post entries and flying out to perimeter shooters, they held Washington to just 9 first-quarter points and limited second-chance opportunities to 2 offensive rebounds.
  • Star Containment: Jose Fernandez’s defensive game plan focused heavily on frontcourt cross-matching and containment. The strategy neutralized Washington’s focal engines, holding Kiki Iriafen well below her season scoring average while forcing the Mystics into 19 costly turnovers.
  • Historical Distribution Thresholds: Erasing the stagnant, isolated possessions that plagued their early 1-2 start, the Wings generated a season-high 30 assists on 33 made field goals—the fifth-most in franchise history—yielding an optimal offensive floor balance with four players scoring in double figures.
  • Rookie Asset Integration: Operating within a controlled minutes-progression framework, rookie guard Azzi Fudd injected elite tempo and spacing off the bench, attacking closeouts off the bounce to shoot an efficient 6-of-9 from the floor for a career-high 12 points.

ARLINGTON, Texas — The Dallas Wings played their most complete game of the season Monday. They routed the Washington Mystics 92-69 at College Park Center to close their three-game homestand and even their record at 2-2.

The Mystics scored 9 points in the first quarter. That tied for the fewest any team has allowed in a quarter this season, and Washington never recovered. Dallas led by 1 point at its smallest margin all night. The Wings forced 19 turnovers, held the Mystics to 2 offensive rebounds, and turned a season-high 30 assists into 33 made baskets. The crowd of 6,251 sold out College Park Center.

Head coach Jose Fernandez credited the defense and the team’s weekend practices for the result.

“This game was won because of how we defended and how we rebounded,” Fernandez said. “It was won because of the commitment to us the last two days practicing and shootaround. That’s where it was won.”

Paige Bueckers led all scorers with 18 points on 7-of-12 shooting. She hit a season-high 4 of 5 from 3-point range and added 7 assists. Arike Ogunbowale added 16 points, 3 assists and a season-high 3 steals. Jessica Shepard posted her first double-double of the season — 12 points, 16 rebounds, 6 assists — and rookie Azzi Fudd scored a career-high 12 points off the bench.

Shepard said the two practice days gave a roster still in its first weeks together time to build defensive connection.

“It was huge,” Shepard said. “Since we’ve had our whole team together, we really haven’t had time to practice just because we were preparing for our first game and then the next game. But just the connection in all of the pieces on defense, I think we just did a great job of flying around and covering for each other today.”

Ogunbowale said the team had answered the scrutiny that followed a 1-2 start.

“I know there was a lot of chitter chatter about everything that happened in the first three games,” Ogunbowale said. “Just having the practice that we were able to have these last couple days and honing in on the things that we need to do, that really helped us.”

Fudd said her job off the bench was to extend the tempo the starters set.

“My goal was just to be aggressive when I got in the game, contribute any way I could,” Fudd said. “They started the game off pushing the pace, being aggressive, getting stops, so I wanted to continue that.”

Shakira Austin led Washington with 12 points, rookie center Lauren Betts added 11 off the bench and Kiki Iriafen posted 9 points and 10 rebounds. The Mystics fell to 2-2.

The victory marked Fernandez’s first regular-season home win as a WNBA head coach. The Wings now begin a three-game road trip Wednesday against the Chicago Sky at 8 p.m. CT, with stops in Atlanta and New York to follow before a return home to face Las Vegas.
