DHJ Quick Take: Mavericks Eye Significant Offer for Tarik Biberović
Dallas acquired Santi Aldama and the draft rights to Tarik Biberović from Memphis on Wednesday, and reports indicate the Mavericks are reportedly preparing a significant offer to bring Biberović over from Fenerbahçe as soon as this fall.
- What did the Mavericks just do? Dallas acquired the draft rights to Santi Aldama and Tarik Biberović from Memphis and is reportedly preparing an offer to bring Biberović stateside.
- What kind of player is Biberović? He’s a knockdown shooter who hit 39.9% from three last season and has a 42.3% career mark across the EuroLeague and BSL since 2018-19.
- Why does this matter for Dallas? The Mavericks would gain a league-ready floor spacer this fall while covering only part of his Fenerbahçe buyout rather than surrendering major assets.
- What’s next? Dallas and Biberović’s camp would need to reach an agreement on a contract that overcompensates for a $2 million buyout, with the Mavericks contributing only $900,000.
On Wednesday, the Dallas Mavericks acquired Santi Aldama and the draft rights to Tarik Biberović in a trade with the Memphis Grizzlies. Much has been made about Aldama, the centerpiece of the trade, but getting him to to the NBA would require a significant buyout.
According to Marc Stein, Dallas has opened discussions with Biberović’s representatives about a potential deal. The Mavericks can contribute up to $900,000 toward his $2 million buyout with Turkish team Fenerbahçe, so any contract Dallas offers would likely have to cover the difference, plus a sweetener to convince Biberović to make the move. It remains to be seen if an offer of that nature will surface.
Bugra Uzar of Eurohoops.net reported that the Mavericks are preparing a “significant offer” for the Bosnian-born sharpshooter. Even with an offer on the table, the buyout gap remains the central hurdle to any move happening soon.
Who is Tarik Biberović?
Drafted with the 56th overall pick in the 2023 NBA Draft, Biberović has remained overseas to play in the EuroLeague and the BSL, the Turkish league. Last season, with an increased EuroLeague workload, he averaged 10.7 points and 3.1 rebounds on 39.9% shooting from beyond the arc.
Fenerbahçe and Biberovic are coming off three consecutive Turkish Cup championships, with Biberović winning MVP of the game in 2026. In the contest, he recorded 28 points, 10 rebounds, and 2 assists on 10-for-13 shooting from the floor and 4-for-5 from three.
His team isn’t without surrounding talent either, featuring a litany of former NBA players. In the biggest game of the season, Biberović was the best player on the floor despite sharing a team with Talen Horton-Tucker, Khem Birch, Brandon Boston Jr., Wade Baldwin IV and Onuralp Bitim.
That isn’t the only time that Biberović has shown up in a big game. In last year’s EuroLeague playoffs, he upped his production to 15.8 points, 2.4 rebounds and 1.4 assists on 56.6% field goal shooting and 52.9% from distance in five games. Those numbers include a 26-point, six three-pointer performance and a 17-point, 6-rebound line, both times leading his team in scoring.
How Would Tarik Biberović Fit in the NBA?
Biberović projects as a knockdown shooter, hitting 42.3% of his triples between the EuroLeague and BSL since the 2018-19 season. He excels in off-ball actions, sprinting around screens and using set plays to get open looks around the perimeter. Tasked with tough shotmaking, Biberović has also proved himself a shooting threat with a hand in his face.
In the flow of the offense, Biberović can get to his spots by roaming off the ball. He isn’t a natural playmaker, but his basketball IQ allows him to act as a connective piece, making quick passes to find the open man. That basketball IQ also helps him on the boards. His numbers aren’t gaudy, but he generally knows where to be and crashes the boards with some frequency. He’s unexceptional athletically, so he’ll get outworked on some rebounds, but the fact that Biberović gets to the right spots is a positive sign.
With a couple more years and NBA-level weight training, the 25-year-old will likely start to pull in a few more boards. At 6-foot-7, Biberović has good positional size to get rebounding position and at least slow down his man on defense. He isn’t super quick and lacks a speedy first step, so he won’t be a stopper, but with his size, BibBiberovićrovic should avoid being hunted on that end.
Don’t expect him to do much dribbling. He’ll occasionally put the ball on the floor a few times to get into actions or to attack closeouts with his two-dribble pull-up, but that isn’t the norm for Biberović. The handle will need to get a bit tighter at the NBA level, but expect that aspect of his game to be scaled back once he gets to North Texas.
All said, as a league-ready shooter, Biberović could slide into the NBA and be an impact role player with the Mavericks and contribute by this fall if his jumper continues to drop at an elite level.
