The Dallas Wings signed forward Amy Okonkwo to a rest-of-season contract on Friday, finalizing her place with the team after joining on a hardship deal two weeks earlier.

Okonkwo has averaged 9.8 points, 2.8 rebounds, and 1.2 steals across six games, including two points and two rebounds in 11 minutes during Thursday’s loss to the Golden State Valkyries. For Dallas, the move locks in a player who has quickly proven her value in an injury-depleted rotation.

Making the Most of an Opportunity

Okonkwo made an immediate impression with eight points in her Aug. 22 debut against Seattle before following with double-figure outings against Golden State, Connecticut, and Atlanta. She credited clear instructions from the coaching staff for helping her settle in quickly.

“Be myself and shoot when I’m open and try to help find my teammates open, play hard defense, and give a lot of energy,” Okonkwo told DallasHoopsJournal.com. “Yeah, they told me to be myself and that’s exactly what I’ll do.”

Myisha Hines-Allen said Okonkwo’s impact went beyond the box score.

“She’s been a spark the second she steps on the court,” Hines-Allen said to DallasHoopsJournal.com. “Even in shootarounds she’s vocal and telling us what she sees, and that holds weight because of the respect she has.”

A Full-Circle Return to Dallas for Amy Okonkwo

The Wings’ deal also serves as a homecoming. Okonkwo starred at TCU and interned with the Wings in basketball operations back in 2018 before launching her professional career overseas.

“It’s amazing being able to play here in Dallas,” Okonkwo told DallasHoopsJournal.com after her debut. “Going to TCU and watching games, working for the Wings in 2018 as an intern, and then coming back to be able to play and be on the court is an amazing feeling. I’m really grateful for the opportunity.”

In the years since, Okonkwo played in Spain, Israel, Mexico, and France, while also starring for Nigeria’s national team with multiple AfroBasket MVPs and Olympic appearances. She said that background sharpened her defensive versatility and prepared her to thrive in Dallas’ small-ball lineups.

“With my national team, we play very hard-nosed defense, switching, making things difficult for the opponent, and I think it’ll help me out here,” Okonkwo told DallasHoopsJournal.com.

Respect Earned in a Hurry

Haley Jones called Okonkwo “a bucket” and praised her fearlessness. Paige Bueckers highlighted how seamlessly she fit into the Wings’ system.

“She’s just really smart. She’s a high-IQ player. She came in and fit right into the system and what we’re trying to do here, and she’s aggressive while she does it,” Bueckers explained to DallasHoopsJournal.com. “She’s fearless… for her to take advantage of this opportunity has been great to see.”

Okonkwo herself said she is committed to doing the little things to help her teammates.

“I know I’m small, but I fight,” Okonkwo said to DallasHoopsJournal.com. “I’ll keep battling and make it as tough as possible for them. That’s the best I can do for my team.”

Looking Ahead

Okonkwo said her approach will remain the same now that her contract has been extended through the rest of the season.

“I know when I step on the floor, I have to give my all,” Okonkwo told DallasHoopsJournal.com. “We still have games to play, and we have to fight every possession. I just try to give my energy to my teammates, encourage them, and keep going even if we miss shots.”

The Wings’ decision to keep her underscores how quickly she has gone from injury fill-in to fixture — and how preparation met opportunity in Dallas.
