Anthony Davis has taken an initial step in his recovery as the Dallas Mavericks continue managing his absence from the lineup. Sidelined with ligament damage in his left hand, Davis has returned to Dallas and is working through the early stages of the rehabilitation process.

Sources told DallasHoopsJournal.com that Davis has begun light on-court work since rejoining the team in Dallas, wearing a protective glove over his left hand. With Davis injuring his non-shooting hand, he can work to stay sharp as his left hand heals from a non-surgical approach.

Whether it’s Davis or Kyrie Irving, the Mavericks have benefited from the leadership provided by their sidelined stars. Despite going through his recovery process and recent trade rumors, Davis was at Friday’s practice in positive spirits. Irving did the same, even providing hands-on instruction to Max Christie as he continued to work on downhill shot creation techniques.

Anthony Davis’ Injury Timeline and Recovery Outlook

Based on the medical evaluation, the recovery process is estimated at approximately six weeks, sources told DallasHoopsJournal.com. Given the Jan. 8 injury date, Davis is expected to miss the remainder of the Mavericks’ schedule leading into the All-Star break. Dallas resumes play Feb. 20 against the Minnesota Timberwolves, though no firm target date has been established for Davis’ return to game action.

The Mavericks previously determined that surgery would not be required, with the injury expected to heal through rest and rehabilitation. Davis suffered the injury late in Dallas’ 116–114 loss to the Utah Jazz while defending Lauri Markkanen on a drive to the basket. He went to the bench in visible discomfort before exiting to the locker room and was ruled out for the remainder of the game.

The setback marks the second extended absence of the season for the 32-year-old. Davis missed 15 of 16 games in November with a calf strain and has also dealt with a groin injury. Overall, he has now missed over half of the Mavericks’ 45 games this season.

When available, Davis has remained productive, averaging 20.4 points, 11.1 rebounds, and 2.8 assists in 20 games while providing a steady presence in the frontcourt.

Dallas Mavericks Adjust Without Anthony Davis

In Davis’ absence, the Mavericks have begun to find modest traction after earlier struggles. Dallas is 9–16 overall in games Davis has not played, but has gone 5–1 over its last six contests, showing incremental improvement as roles and rotations continue to settle.

The Mavericks enter the post–All-Star break stretch still navigating a crowded Western Conference race. While Davis remains weeks away from a potential return, his participation in light on-court work reflects a measured approach as Dallas continues to manage his recovery cautiously.
