Cooper Flagg Among Key Names On 10-Player Dallas Mavericks Injury Report Against Utah Jazz

The Dallas Mavericks’ already-thin margin grew even smaller Wednesday night, when rookie forward Cooper Flagg was ruled out for the remainder of the 118-109 loss against the Denver Nuggets with a left ankle sprain.

Flagg exited after playing 14 minutes, finishing with six points, one rebound, and one assist before heading to the locker room. His status now looms over the Mavericks as they prepare to face the Utah Jazz on the second night of a back-to-back, with the team considering him doubtful to play.

Entering Thursday’s game, Flagg was averaging 18.8 points, 6.3 rebounds, and 4.2 assists in 40 games and was coming off a 27-point outing against Brooklyn on Monday, further highlighting how much Dallas has leaned on him amid mounting injuries.

Injuries Continue To Test Dallas Mavericks’ Depth

Flagg’s setback is the latest complication for a Mavericks team already navigating an extended list of absences. Anthony Davis remains out with a left hand sprain, while Kyrie Irving continues to be sidelined. Max Christie is doubtful with an illness, and Daniel Gafford is questionable due to ankle soreness. P.J. Washington, who recently returned after missing five games, is again listed as questionable due to right ankle injury management.

The constant rotation churn has forced Dallas to rely heavily on players further down the depth chart, including extended minutes for Jaden Hardy, Caleb Martin, and Dwight Powell, along with two-way contributors Miles Kelly and Moussa Cissé.

Jason Kidd acknowledged earlier this week that the cumulative effect has reshaped how the Mavericks operate on a nightly basis.

“With injuries, we’ve leaned on guys more than we probably should in terms of minutes and stretches,” Kidd said. “The more we can stay healthy, the more we can shorten those stints.”

Naji Marshall Answers the Call

While roles have shifted across the roster, Naji Marshall has emerged as one of Dallas’ most consistent stabilizers. Marshall scored a team-high 24 points against Denver on 9-of-16 shooting, adding five rebounds and three assists as the Mavericks generated offense largely through pace and paint pressure.

Kidd pointed to that style of play when asked about what has kept Dallas competitive despite the mounting injuries.

“We’re playing with pace, we’re getting good looks,” Kidd said. “The younger players are getting important time in clutch games. That experience matters.”

Marshall has now recorded six 20-point games this season — more than he totaled in his previous four NBA seasons combined — and has scored 20 or more points in back-to-back games for the fifth time as a Maverick. His ability to attack mismatches and create without plays being run specifically for him has become increasingly important as Dallas juggles lineups.

“So if we can continue to get healthy, that would be a good thing,” Kidd said. “But guys have to take advantage of these opportunities.”

Utah Jazz Matchup Adds Immediate Pressure

Dallas enters Thursday’s matchup with Utah at 15–26, sitting outside the top 10 in the Western Conference, while the Jazz arrive at 17–22, firmly in the mix of a tightly packed middle tier. The teams will meet again later in the week, adding further urgency as the Mavericks weigh health, availability, and workload management.

With Flagg’s status uncertain and multiple rotation players already sidelined, Dallas’ reliance on contributors like Marshall, Hardy, and Martin appears unlikely to ease anytime soon.

“After the All-Star break, it becomes a sprint,” Kidd said. “Each game means more.”

For the Mavericks, that sprint now continues with little room for missteps — and fewer bodies to absorb them.
