Multiple Members Of Cleveland Cavaliers ‘Vehemently Against’ Trading Evan Mobley For Milwaukee Bucks’ Giannis Antetokounmpo

DHJ Quick Take: Cavs Resist Mobley-Giannis Swap

  • Internal Opposition: Multiple members of the Cleveland Cavaliers are reportedly “vehemently against” the idea of trading rising big man Evan Mobley in any potential deal for Milwaukee Bucks superstar Giannis Antetokounmpo.
  • Antetokounmpo Availability: The Bucks and Antetokounmpo are widely expected to part ways this offseason, established as a major storyline with Cleveland firmly positioned among the interested suitors for the future Hall of Famer.
  • Line in the Sand: Despite their strong pursuit of the championship-level superstar, the Cavaliers organization draws a clear boundary when it comes to sacrificing the long-term future of Mobley to get a deal done.

Multiple members of the Cleveland Cavaliers are “vehemently against” trading Evan Mobley for Milwaukee Bucks superstar Giannis Antetokounmpo, according to Chris Fedor of Cleveland.com.

The Bucks and Antetokounmpo are expected to part ways this offseason and the Cavaliers are one of the teams interested in the future Hall of Famer.

However, it appears Cleveland doesn’t want to part ways with Mobley to acquire Antetokounmpo.

“The Cavs love Mobley, they believe in him and there are multiple members of the Cleveland brain trust that would be vehemently against a Giannis-Mobley swap, as the 2025 Defensive Player of the Year and Second-Team All-NBA selection is viewed as not only a future star but also a proverbial safety net when it comes to another rebuild,” Fedor wrote. “There’s also the matter of Antetokounmpo’s contract. Would he be willing to extend in Cleveland beyond the one guaranteed season left on his current deal? Would the Cavs surrender one of their best players — and most attractive trade asset — with so much uncertainty surrounding Antetokounmpo’s future? At 31 years old, with a few leg-related injuries, it’s far from a no-brainer.”

The Cavaliers made the Eastern Conference Finals this year for the first time since 2018. They lost to the New York Knicks in four games.

During exit interviews, Cavaliers president of basketball operations Koby Altman spoke very highly of Mobley, who won the 2024-25 Defensive Player of the Year Award. The USC product will be only 25 years old next season, while Antetokounmpo turns 32 next season.

“We are very fortunate to have drafted Evan Mobley in a spectacular rookie class,” Altman said. “You think about that rookie class, right? Cade Cunningham, right? MVP candidate. Scottie Barnes, who has emerged to be one of the best players in the NBA. We saw that for seven games. That was not fun. Franz Wagner. Evan Mobley. That’s a spectacular class, and out of those guys, who’s the first to the conference finals? Evan Mobley. We have to take pride in that. It’s easy to knock someone down. He’s a franchise-caliber player, and we’re very fortunate to have him.”

It sounds like the Cavaliers are largely running it back with Mobley, Donovan Mitchell, James Harden and Jarrett Allen, which would certainly prevent them from trading for Antetokounmpo because the Bucks would undoubtedly want Mobley in a Giannis trade.

Antetokounmpo will make $58.5 million next season. He has a player option worth $62.8 million for the 2027-28 season. The 2021 Finals MVP has spent his entire NBA career with the Bucks. He’s a two-time MVP, one-time Finals MVP, one-time Defensive Player of the Year and 10-time All-Star.

Anything can happen between now and opening night of next season, but it appears Antetokounmpo will not be getting traded to the Cavaliers.
